Ooh, lists...did somebody say "lists"!?
Sort of related to what Josh discussed above, and I suppose this is a bit of a cheat...but I essentially have two separate categories of classic Star Trek episodes:
a) Those that I consider "the best" qualitatively (my list here tends to jibe with...
I feel the same way about Voyager.
For me, ranking the various Star Trek series is easy. TOS is waaaaay out ahead of everything else. I also really like both Next Gen and DS9, especially their casts...even if both shows often have...how to describe it?...an at times ponderous stateliness and...
Me too! Any episode with kids featured prominently (see also "And the Children Shall Lead") gets skipped in the rotation. Never liked them when I was a kid myself, and still don't.
Grace Lee Whitney's legs, on the other hand? Big fan.
I'd think I'd say that she wasn't strictly a romantic interest for Kirk...but there was a definite vibe there. I don't think Kirk went on a pizza date with Gillian only to get information on the whales from her. There is also an implied flirtatious future possibility in her line, "See you around...
Surprised to see a lot of folks aren't to fond of Star Trek IV. Perhaps it hasn't aged well for some fans, with its contemporary Earth setting. I suppose it is more of a "warm comforting blanket for Trek fans" sort of movie, and has little outer space action, which makes it seem less like true...
Count me in as another who enjoys the new remastered TOS effects. I grew up watching the show in syndication in the 70s and so know the original effects well. They were certainly effective enough for their day and some are still quite impressive for the time and budget available. That said, I...
One of my favorites from the 3rd season as well. I also really like the Next Generation episode that feels like an unofficial remake in many ways, "The Perfect Mate" (with the delectable Famke Janssen, playing a much more likable character than the snotty Elaan).
That's funny...Seven of Nine is about the only thing I liked about Voyager. Robert Picardo's holographic doctor was the only other character I found at all interesting on that show. Can't stand Janeway and the other characters I found dull as dishwater. But hey - viva la difference!
Hey, Ben! I see lots of Voyager there...not a fan of The Next Generation? My Trek shelf looks similar to yours, just swap out all those Voyager sets with Next Generation blus...;) Though to be honest, I don't own the first two seasons of Next Gen...still debating if they're worth picking up for...
Re: the audio...even I, not a true audiophile by any means (I just like it loud and clear!) can tell that something's off about the theme song on the Star Trek: TOS Blu-Rays. But the other sounds - effects, dialogue, incidental music, all sound fine to these (admittedly unsophisticated) ears...
I can certainly understand the nostalgia factor above, truly I can. But for me, personally, I would never want to go back to CRT televisions, or (heaven forbid) VHS tapes. No way Jose! Even when I see the wires, or when cheap sets become more apparent, or when I gaze at the make-up pancaked on...
Yes, that dubbed in line from Kirk is bad, and obvious. What wasn't obvious to me until after watching, was Fred Williamson's appearance in the episode. I had completely forgotten about that. Not an auspicious debut, perhaps, but it did get him started in the industry.
Yes, it's amazing what they were able to get away with for the time on Star Trek, in terms of both revealing costumes and story themes, under the guise of science fiction.
All this talk of season 3 of TOS caused me to pull out my Blu-Ray set and watch "The Cloud Minders." What an odd start this episode has. What with Spock's uncharacteristic flirting with the "work of art" Droxine (Diana Ewing) and then his extended interior monologue in the rest chamber, the feel...
Definitely agree with all of the above, at least as it pertains to TOS, Next Gen and DS9...and especially, Diana Mulduar! Other than the late, lamented Firefly, the imperfect but intriguing Westworld and a handful of others, most of what passes for sci-fi these days is thin gruel indeed...either...
Fair enough, sorry I misinterpreted your post. I can only think of 2 such episodes ("Spectre of the Gun" and "A Fistful of Datas") where this happens, though...are there more?
Do you feel the same way about other historical periods in Trek...like Robin Hood as in "Qpid," or Nazis, as in...
Funnily enough, I quite like "The Omega Glory" - lots of good action and running around on a planet, etc....until that terrible ending, with its frankly ludicrous final revelation (which is not helped by Kirk's over-the-top speech.)
Upon reflection, season 1 is very strong indeed, with only the...
Hmm. Not sure about writing off all episodes of Star Trek: TOS (or any Trek series, for that matter) where the crew land on a planet...think that's a good 70% or more of the show! I generally prefer the planet-based stories to the ship-based ones, myself, though I'll readily admit that many...
Very interesting, detailed article on an actress who appeared in many of my favorite TV series (and some terrific movies as well)...thanks for the link! Highly recommended reading for not only fans of Trek, but of the myriad other shows that Ms. Hill appeared in over the years.
Yes, Morgan Woodward is ferocious in "The Omega Glory." The whole episode is a fun action romp until it gets to that cringe-inducing "Declaration of Independence" speech Kirk gives at the end. One step too far in the suspension of disbelief sweepstakes, to be sure...but not enough to ruin the...
Count me in as one who thinks Piller, at the very least, righted The Next Generation ship in season three. I agree that a sense of blandness crept in eventually, but I'd argue that those middle seasons of the show (3-5) have the largest share of good-to-great episodes in them. There was some...
I agree. Is this the best episode of Star Trek: TOS? Not by a long shot. It's silly in many ways, but it's a pretty entertaining watch, and far, FAR from the worst the series had to offer.
Ditto "The Omega Glory."
