I received some correspondence from folks who said the misalignment examples I posted didn't look all that bad. I'm thinking that may be because I posted scaled-down images. So I'm going to post one last example at a higher resolution (click to view) and then I'll get off my soapbox. This one...
By "rough" I mean the anaglyph conversions themselves are rough. The 3-D BD is obviously not in anaglyph, and viewing it in true HD 3-D will looks worlds better than these anaglyphs. Again, I'm not trying to illustrate anything about overall image quality -- only about the vertical misalignment...
A couple other badly misaligned shots:
Disclaimer: these images are rough anaglyph conversions of the BD. They are not intended to in any way represent the overall image quality of the BD. They are intended solely to illustrate the vertical stereoscopic misalignment issues present on the BD and...
That's tough to quantify, as I certainly haven't done a shot-by-shot analysis of the entire disc. The particular shot I posted is about as bad as it gets. That shot lasts about 10 seconds. There are are few more shots I'm aware of that are just as bad. There are lots more that are only slightly...
To illustrate just how bad some of the vertical alignment gets in this release, I threw together a quick-and-dirty anaglyph conversion for comparison. The BD is, of course, in full HD 3-D, not in anaglyph.
Disclaimer: these images are rough anaglyph conversions of the BD. They are not intended...
There are a couple shots of crocs. There is an earlier one where Lucas blows the boat horn and startles one. That's not the one that's flipped. The flipped shot occurs at about 13:11. You can spin your glasses 180 degrees (reverse eyes) and see it in correct 3-D.
I'm pretty fussy about 3-D and I was looking yesterday with a very critical eye. The brain is incredibly forgiving in terms of 3-D perception. I'm guessing that most viewers will be unaware of the all but the worst of the misalignment issues unless they are actively looking for them.
To put...
I've watched a good bit more of it now. Literally dozens of vertically misaligned shots. Many of them are only slightly off, but a couple are egregious. Another really badly aligned shot is the one where David and Dr. Maia are pouring the Rotenone into the oxygen tanks.
Some shots will start...
The reverse 3-D shot and all of the vertically misaligned shots have been present in every theatrical 3-D presentation I have ever seen. I suspect that the issues have been baked into every release print throughout the film's history. So in some sense, it's historically accurate, but I seriously...
I had a quick look at Creature 3-D. It's mostly quite excellent, with a few warts that could have been easily corrected. The reverse 3-D shot is unfixed. It starts at about 13:11 (crocodile jumps in water). There are also several instances of vertical misalignment. (One example: early scene in...
I would go even further than "usually"...I would allege that it is always the display causing any perceived crosstalk and never the 3-D BD itself.
Discussion of crosstalk in a 3-D BD review is meaningless unless the reader has the exact same player, glasses, and display as the reviewer. That's...
I always disregard any mentions of crosstalk in 3-D reviews that lay blame on the disc itself, since that indicates to me that the reviewer doesn't deeply understand the technology involved. In this case, it is hard to interpret exactly what "issues" the low score is based on. It mentions...
The review of Creature 3-D over at blu-ray dot com is not exactly glowing.
I wish that reviewers would disclose the hardware upon which they review 3-D discs.
The commentary on the Creature from the Black Lagoon DVD featured only Tom Weaver.
The commentary on the Revenge of the Creature DVD featured Tom Weaver, Bob Burns, and Lori Nelson.
That's what worries me. SENSIO isn't just any old content distributor. Their specialty is 3-D hardware and software. And even they couldn't get it right.
I've probably seen It Came from Outer Space in 3-D more often than any other Golden Age title. Bob, you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain there are a significant number of stereoscopic flaws in that title that would need to be addressed. Many are "baked" into the release prints...
Bob,
IIRC, there is also one brief instance of reverse 3-D in this title. It's a very short shot of the banks of the lagoon. I'm curious to see if Universal caught and fixed it.
You have an advance copy of one of the most highly anticipated Golden Age 3-D titles of all time, and you won't be watching in 3-D????
No offense, but that's just wrong. :D
