    The Lion King (2019)

Actually, we don't know that. My $15 or whatever it was to see the film opening night in premium format is in that billion dollars. Not all billion dollar films are liked by the people who turn out to see them or are guaranteed to generate a successful sequel. I'm sure some people liked it...

Well, yeah, I didn't think I needed to qualify the fact that my post is my opinion. What else would it be? That being said, even though he wasn't "treated with the same level of respect," Elton still did the new end credits song for the movie, so I'm sure he was happy to cash Disney's...

Elton John isn't a fan of the new movie either: https://ew.com/movies/2019/10/16/elton-john-new-lion-king-music-huge-disappointment/ He speaks the truth.

I understand the impulse to wait, but you're lucky you still found it in 3D. It hasn't been available here in 3D for several weeks. It seems like 3D is only available for the first few weeks when something is near the top of the box office, and then it shrinks to 2D only after that. That's...

I kind of agree, but I also have to admit that I didn't peg that as a live-action shot, so he still tricked me.

Jon Favreau said at the premiere that he slipped one single live-action shot filmed in Africa into the movie to see if anyone would notice it among the CGI shots. He just posted to Instagram what shot it is. https://www.slashfilm.com/live-action-lion-king-shot/

    The Lion King (2019)

From Deadline today: Of course, the Friday number last weekend had $23 million of Thursday night previews rolled into it. But this still might be a higher weekend drop than Disney would have expected. Perhaps this indicates word-of-mouth might be a little more mixed than the A Cinemascore...

    The Lion King (2019)

I love Jon Favreau -- I'm a big fan of Iron Man, and Chef, and The Jungle Book -- but this is a terrible way to approach a remake. "The trick is to make people feel like they saw the old movie?" Really? We can all watch the old movie at home without having to pay for it again.

    The Lion King (2019)

I think you guys are missing my point. Even in the case of this wextreme hypothetical -- everyone who loves the original goes once and hates the remake -- there are enough people in the world who love the original to make the film instantly profitable just based on people finding out that they...

    The Lion King (2019)

Oh, I agree. I just meant that my hypothetical of everyone who sees it once because they like the original hating it is probably extreme. But it would make money even if that were the case. I went because I felt obligated to see what they did to one of my favorite movies, and I didn't like it...

    The Lion King (2019)

The fan base for the original is so huge that even if every single person who loves it went to see the remake one time and decided that they hated it, it would probably still make money. I don't think the reaction to it has been quite that negative; I'm just using an extreme hypothetical...

    The Lion King (2019)

The stage show works because it accepts that the audience knows this is not real. They know you are suspending your disbelief for the show and they want to show you how it's done. You see the masks, and you also see the actor's face under the mask. You see the puppet, but you also see the...

:excl: The Lion King is a cultural touchstone. How have you managed to avoid it for 25 years? Especially if you own it? (This is a serious question.)

    The Lion King (2019)

From Deadline: https://deadline.com/2019/07/the-lion-king-weekend-box-office-july-records-1202648944/ The comparison to Walt seems like a rationalization. Creatively, I feel like the "Do we dare?" conversation should have been a "Should we?" conversation. I would have voted "no" from a...

Box Office Mojo is reporting an official figure of $23 million in Thursday preview grosses. Deadline is projecting between a $185 million to $200 million weekend as of right now, which decimates the previous July record of $169 million set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. And...

    The Lion King (2019)

I doubt this is a concern. Favreau has made 2.35:1 films in the past, including the Iron Man films which Disney owns. Toy Story 4 is in scope even though its predecessors are all 1.77:1. It's not like Disney is opposed to releasing a movie with "black bars."

    The Lion King (2019)

There was a rumor to that effect a while back, but then they confirmed that it was going to be in there. As limp as it was, they might as well have cut it, but I suspect they felt obligated to keep a version of it because that's an iconic scene from the original. I wanted to see this not...

    The Lion King (2019)

1.85:1 is also the ratio Favreau used for The Jungle Book. Maybe he finds it easier to make these kinds of films using that ratio.

    The Lion King (2019)

This is unusual. For "select" musical sequences in the movie, the aspect ratio will expand for IMAX -- but, apparently, only a handful of IMAX theaters are getting the shifting ratio version of the movie, instead of all of them like for most IMAX releases...

For anybody who is planning to see The Lion King in 3D with a group, Atom Tickets is holding a promotion where if you buy between 4 and 10 tickets to any 3D showing, they'll knock off the 3D upcharge so you get the tickets for the price of 2D tickets. This isn't relevant to me, but I know some...

    The Lion King (2019)

Personally, I never really expected this to be anything else. The message behind every piece of marketing has been, "It's exactly the Lion King you remember." If nothing else, they're going to deliver what they advertised. Obviously, we disagree on Aladdin and we've had that discussion and...

    The Lion King (2019)

I get that -- but I feel like I want to know what has been done to it simply because I love the original so much. It's not so much that I feel as though a remake was necessary at all, but since they did it, I want to know what they did. I can't have a fully formed valid opinion of it without...

    The Lion King (2019)

My theater has now finalized additional showtimes for Thursday that weren't up before and has the movie starting once just about every 15 minutes or so from 6:00pm to 11:30pm, with 20 showtimes total for the evening. It might not be selling a huge number of advance tickets, but I think they are...

But then it really would be completely shot-for-shot and they wouldn't have anything to point to and say, "Look, that's new!" Real animals usually can't show that much emotion in their face. It's a side-effect of the decision to make this as photorealistic as possible. Babe was a whimsical...

Also, there will be a behind-the-scenes special on ABC next Tuesday night called "The Lion King: Can You Feel the Love Tonight with Robin Roberts." They are going to show the entire Can You Feel the Love Tonight scene -- which I don't want to see until the movie -- along with interviews and...
