Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

Why is it a "problem" though? It's the way the world is headed. It's just natural evolution of things. VHS..laserdiscs..DVD..Blu...4K...now streaming has started to pull ahead.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

It's part of the revolution of media. We all shed a tear when the last record store closed in our towns. Some shed a tear when the used VHS tapes stores folded, Some will do the same for these kind of shops when, like they said in the article, DVD is no longer relevant. We have a handful of...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

That's a lot of discs to check! Like 10 or more movies to watch per day for 365 days straight? :) Glad they all work well and that you are enjoying them all.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

So you feel confident that all of the 1000's of discs on your shelves will all play perfectly once you get around to viewing all 1000's? :) As for burned DVD's. I can tell you first hand that they can be the worst offenders. In the old days when I copied discs to blank DVD's just a few short...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

All I can say is good luck. :) When was the last time you watched/reviewed all of those 1000's of discs to see how many have rotted? How many different ones do you view per month? Per year?

No more riskier to own than discs that as you know just sitting around are rotting every second of the day and will one day soon become unplayable. I'd venture to guess my "purchased movies" will far outlast most discs of the same movie. I'll take the risk any day of the week (buy streaming)

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

yes and no. I can stream the same music or movies for as many years as I want as long as I opt to pay the monthly fee. Also, I can also BUY whatever movie or TV show I want and stream it whenever I wish. I don't just have to "rent" them.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I had a good chuckle last night and it came from a goofy source. So my wife has taken to the new Queer Eye show on netflix so she's watching it as we're going to bed and as I'm dozing off I see the interior designer guy doing a walk through of the guests home and he looks at a shelf unit in the...

Valid point but I'm sure a good majority of folks find ample supplies of music they listen to regularly.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

One other aspect of this physical media obsession with some "collectors" is the sheer amount of cash that is sitting idle on a shelf for YEARS never to be seen, or at best seen once. I've read of some folks around have almost literally a pile of discs that when totaled up would pay for 1 or 2...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

Read a book, take a walk, write in a diary, draw, do a puzzle, take a road trip, sit and relax. I have NO tie to media at this point in my life. If my net died for a day, it wouldn't bother me one bit. I don't have any ties to movies or TV to the point I'd panic that I couldn't watch say The...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

My parents were the same. Back when DVD hit, dad wanted a new player so we got that and a big new LCD TV before LCD was a big thing. He was all set. For Xmas I'd get his a couple of movies he liked to watch. But as years would go by I noticed the player had a layer of dust on it and the closet...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I'm sure in fairly rapid pace that will change. Physical media is becoming less and less prominent B&M stores. Pricing is still too high after all these years. And really, how many average everyday folks are clambering to find all the obscure stuff that is hanging on by a thread on physical...

What are you talking about? You do realize that with Pandora, Spotify, Google Play, and all the other streaming services you can play any album you want in full. These services aren't just jukeboxes playing random songs. I have a ton of albums in my "favorites" that I can play at any time...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I vote no, no it isn't a shame. I'll be glad when it's gone. Anyone who's paying $10++ for ONE cd that has maybe 1 or 2 songs they like are crazy IMO. $10 can get you a month's worth of a high quality sounding catalog of all KINDS of music/albums. I mean a TON of old and new music at your...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

You point out the main reason I stopped buying discs. Lack of interest in re-watching. Many times as you say the impulse to buy cheap was too great so I'd buy a movie I swore I'd watch many times and in the end, the disc stayed in the shrink wrap and on a shelf or in a storage bin and never was...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I sure wouldn't invest in multiple players and double or triple discs of the same movie to 'future proof". By the time discs dry up, there will most likely be many more streaming sources for the movies people fear won't be available. So you can just evolve with the rest of the folks out there...

Looking at Spotify and Pandora today and I see quite a bit of all of those, especially soundtracks and classical stuff. Both services have way more genres available than just pop or similar top hits.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I'm mid 50's and haven't bought a cd in years nor a physical disc of a movie. I've been streaming for probably 4 years now and don't regret the switch at all. It's actually been a blessing in disguise. Using Spotify and Pandora has opened me up to a MUCH bigger world of music than I'd ever be...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

Even if they hired to most knowledgeable musical salespeople (or movie aficionados) it would make zero impact. People just don't want to spend $15-20 on a cd anymore when they just like 1 song. They can now just sign up for a free Spotify or Pandora account on their phones that have unlimited...
