Hello fellow Droogs, I sort of fell off HTF recently, but I'm still watching lots of movies. Happy New Year to everyone here! Anyone else seen Valkyrie yet? I actually thought it was great. I was hoping it would be decent, and the reviews were sort of OK, but it definitely exceeded...

I guess I can see people thinking that Indy IV is really bad if they don't think Ford did a good job in the role this time. This series is obviously a lot more about one central character than SW ever was. If you buy into his performance this time, then that's about all you need for it to be a...

I saw Indy IV today. Overall, I think it's pretty good, maybe a notch below Last Crusade and a bit better than Temple of Doom. The crystal skull business doesn't make much sense on its own terms near the end, but there's a lot of good character stuff and some fun action scenes. It definitely...

The initial rumblings on the web about Indy IV weren't too good, from what I could tell, but it's actually doing really well on Rotten Tomatoes, something like 80% fresh. I was planning on seeing it anyway, but it's good to hear that it might be decent enough, a la Last Crusade.

Even though it didn't have a trailer for Teeth, Iron Man was a fun time at the movies--I saw it last night. The hype is a bit out of control, and I don't think it's as great as the collective praise is making it seem to be, but Downey is really well cast and there are some terrific action...

Actually, the entire plot of Red is touched off by one of the characters accidentally running over a dog, if I remember right. Wait a minute, was everyone talking about some other kind of "dog"?

Hey Steve, I finally saw the DVD of Grand Prix over the weekend, about two years after it came out. I think I remember you being a big fan of that movie. Well, the script is total dreck, but those racing scenes sure are incredible. I don't think I'll be buying it, because I'd never want to...

Fun comments, Steve...I thought that movie was really good, but awfully depressing. The cast definitely makes it work, everyone in it is terrific. And some naked Marisa doesn't hurt either. ;) I really liked the original Sleuth when I saw it on TV some years ago, but the DVD is out of print...

That clip is from Kill Bill Vol. 1. Russell, any chance you might run into The Guns of Brixton? :P I'd post a video, but I can't access YouTube here at work.

Rick, I saw The Big Trail in a theater last year, in that original widescreen version. It was nice to look at, but the script and the acting were pretty clunky. It's an interesting curiosity, but I don't think it holds up very well.

Funny Games is a remake by Euro director Michael Haneke of his own Austrian movie of the same title, from about a decade ago. I haven't seen the original. I'm not sure how gory it is, but the trailer makes it clear that there's some pretty grisly psychological torture, at the very least.

I loved Assassination of Jesse James, although it is, admittedly, long and pretty slow-paced at times. I'm not too surprised that it didn't do all that well with critics or with audiences, but it really worked for me. You guys were talking about The Proposition a while back here, so I...

Maybe those birds were auditioning for a later Hitch movie? Apropos of nothing in particular, I saw a funny question posted on the IMDB boards for the Indiana Jones movies. For Last Crusade, someone asked, "what would have happened if they had tested the wrong holy grail cup on a baby?"...

The introduction of the Best Actress nominees had a funny moment for Cate Blanchett. After the clip of her in the Elizabeth sequel, the look on her face seemed to say, "Wow, WTF was I doing in THAT movie!" LOL.

Steve, maybe your mini-custom HT could be the zero gravity toilet from 2001? I gotta wonder about those Star Trek themed ones. Don't you figure the type of person who would drop all the money for that is going to be the type who would also do stuff like saying "make it so" every time someone...

There's a lot of speculation about what may have been causing trouble for Ledger in this article, but it's pretty clear that everyone's still just guessing: Jack Nicholson on drugs death of Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger: 'I warned him' | the Daily Mail

Russ, it seems we had a really similar reaction to the movie in a lot of ways: I also thought a lot about the influences of Giant and Citizen Kane, with a bunch of Kubrick sprinkled in. Except our reactions differed in the slightly important point that I thought it wasn't any good. ;) I do...

I also saw There Will Be Blood, and DDL is definitely great, but I was pretty disappointed in it overall. I didn't think the story was strong enough to sustain everything that was going on, and there was at least one important plot point that didn't work at all, IMO.

I was really stunned to hear about Ledger. Of course anyone dying that young is a tragedy, but sometimes it's not that surprising in some sense, like maybe with Marilyn Monroe. But I wouldn't have thought there was anything pointing in that direction at all with Ledger.

Happy New Year to all the little droogies out there! I've gone through almost all of the extras on the Blade Runner 5-disc set now. I listened to the Scott commentary and the one on the workprint, still need to get to the other two on the Final Cut. I haven't listened to any of the Phillip K...

Hey Steve, can you post some more Final Cut screencaps? I got my briefcase today, but I'm feeling a little lazy to pull any screencaps out for a new sig, which is long overdue. And almost any shot from Blade Runner will be sig-worthy, so if you throw a few more up, I'm sure I'll have some good...

The way they move in and out of songs is a little different from a lot of other musicals, sort of a more complicated structure with the singing and the dialogue mixed together. And most of the songs are either very dark or sharply sarcastic, so there isn't much in the way of syrupy ballads that...

Anyone else see Sweeney Todd yet? I saw it today, great stuff. It certainly isn't your average musical, not with all those geysers of blood spurting forth like a '70s samurai movie. I'm sure that a few clueless Jack Sparrow fans wandered in and got caught off guard by all those people...

Yeah, that was it, and subtract points from me for calling it her "birthday"...LOL. It's amusing because Bryant tells Deckard that she's a "pleasure model," i.e. built for sex. I guess activating a sex slave replicant on Valentine's Day would be what counts for "romance" in the off-world colonies!
