TMG: THE NAME OF THE GAME: SEASON 1 8/19/2014

Yes, Neil, thank you for the information. I am not intending this as a means of "blaming the messenger" in any way, but I find the state of affairs you describe just beyond sad. Here is a show that has enough of a market audience that a DVD company believes it will be profitable to release it...

TMG: THE NAME OF THE GAME: SEASON 1 8/19/2014

Thank you for the update, Neil. I just can't understand why studios like Universal won't let licensing companies make new prints if they want to do so. I realize that they often can't afford, or prefer not to shoulder, the expense. But in the cases where the smaller companies are willing, why...

That's good news. At this stage, it would be very easy for them to end the release plans quietly, but they do seem to be working on the problems.

The cable transfers are the Digital Betacam ones for those episodes that aired on Encore. The 1" transfers of the other episodes, which according to the Australian source were not destroyed or lost, are just very old. I don't know if they were on hand at Universal or were being used for...

TMG: THE NAME OF THE GAME: SEASON 1 8/19/2014

I went back and looked at the email from Madman. They said that some of the episodes were on Digital Betacam and some were on 1" video. I suppose the result is that either the set comes out with two very different looks for different episodes, or they have to fix up the older elements. What I...

I think they have at least something for all the episodes. A couple of years ago, I was in contact with someone at Madman in Australia when they were considering the title. They didn't end up doing it, but at that time, they were told that there were elements available for all the episodes, but...

That's a fair warning, but I am still enjoying my DVDs of It Takes A Thief more than my DVDs of, say, Switch or Run For Your Life. If that's what they have for The Name of the Game, I'll take it.

The first season has the most episodes with updated elements, so it should require less work and expense than the second and third seasons. I would hope that we could at least get the first year as a test of market interest.

Given your description of your taste, I think it's a show you would enjoy. Alas, it may be a little while, as I emailed Shout and they told me Timeless still has no planned release date.

I wouldn't call it definitive, as May 31 is a Sunday, but it's certainly encouraging that someone is putting up new listings for the show this year.

That's a good point. (Although I wonder how much the people who use venues like this one reflect the general marketplace.)

TMG: THE NAME OF THE GAME: SEASON 1 8/19/2014

Thanks for the update. My question about shows like this one is: do the inferior elements really affect sales? Do they think that Checkmate or M Squad would have sold many more copies if the prints looked better? I would love good-looking copies, of course, but I would certainly not avoid buying...

This is certainly right, and fair enough, but I do think that Ironside would have fared better had Shout picked it up now, rather than when they did. Their recent practices of issuing complete series sets before individual seasons and of fast tracking dramas of that era would have been...

Ironside? Or Marcus Welby? Those are a shame because it seems that once a licensee stalls a show, it's pretty much done for. Shout may get back around to them, as they have just done with Mister Ed, but I'm not too confident.

It just seems so frustratingly random as to which Universal series have useable elements. Name of the Game is one very high on my list and I'm glad it's available. But it seems as though there is no way to predict what has been spared. Name of the Game is available, but Hec Ramsey is gone; The...

I wrote to Shout again to check on its status. According to their customer service department, they are "actively working" on the set and it is definitely postponed, rather than canceled. The only stated reason is a "production delay." The release is projected for sometime in 2015.

I wrote to Shout and got an answer today saying that there have been some production delays on the series, and the release date has been changed. But the title is still coming, and they will announce a new release date as soon as they are sure of it.

Well, Amazon has caught up to everyone else and changed the release date to October 28th. Hard to justify complaining too much about a slight delay in releasing a show that might never have been released at all.

There's also the question of international reruns from before the fire. For example, The Snoop Sisters hadn't been rerun domestically since the CBS Late Movie, but it aired in Europe and so there were other prints lying around. Hec Ramsey, alas, doesn't seem to have crossed the oceans lately and...

TMG: THE NAME OF THE GAME: SEASON 1 8/19/2014

Thanks, Frank. So if those prints did survive after the 2008 fire, it wouldn't make much positive difference toward a DVD release, but they might have found their way to RTV. Maybe if we start rumors of a new Switch movie with Will Smith and Robert De Niro, Universal will be moved to go back to...

I just looked back at the news item on TV Shows on DVD and all they would share was that it wasn't E1.Thanks for the detail about the TV Land run. Maybe that's the problem. The last complete set was for satellite channels in the 80s, and those were lying around and burned in the fire. The extant...

I got the worldwide search story from someone at Madman and shared it here. I didn't have RTV, but when someone mentioned it, I checked and found that the show had been airing in 2010. I contacted the same person at Madman and he seemed surprised, but also not exactly jumping out of his seat to...

I don't know how exhaustive their search for Hec Ramsey was. Although I haven't heard of the show being rerun anywhere since the CBS Late Movie in the early 80s, so I can at least understand that instance. Switch has aired on several cable and satellite outlets since the 80s, and on that digital...

I think Hec Ramsey's working prints were lost also. Timeless had been planning to release it and then said that they were unable to do so.But what still puzzles me is that although everyone says the useable prints of Switch burned up in 2008, the series ran on RTV in 2010. Someone must have at...

Franciosa was only slightly behind the others for the first two years, but there were a lot of difficulties filming his segments and finally, after only filming one regular show and that Las Vegas two-parter in the third season, he was let go and that unit started using guest leads instead.

I'm also looking forward to the Las Vegas show (Franciosa's farewell appearances, I believe). The other thing about getting the second and third seasons out is that more of those episodes have been unavailable than the first season, so even major fans of the show probably haven't seen a lot of...
