It’s such a great shame about The Last Valley. I’m still kicking myself for not seeing the film in 70mm when it first opened in London. I caught up with it a few years later when it was showing in a tiny provincial U.K. cinema in, believe it or not, a 16mm pan and scan print. Despite the...
Nope! I’m sure French critics who first coined the term in the late 1940s were not thinking in terms of including colour films in the definition. It’s in the name; Film Noir.
I don't know if I'm alone in this but when I open a new disc I put it in the player and don't look at the playing surface so I wouldn't know if it's scratched or not. As long as it plays - and every KL disc I have plays perfectly - then that's all I care about.
I very much enjoyed Kino's FRENCH NOIR COLLECTION which contains three films which I'd never seen before. Legendary Jean Gabin stars in the briskly paced "Speaking of Murder" doing what he does best as a gangster while "Back to the Wall" has a highly original plot full of twists with elements of...
I’ve now received and watched “The Counterfeit Traitor”. I don’t understand criticisms of the picture quality. Picture and sound are fine as far as I’m concerned. I always prefer the first half of the film which concentrates on the espionage elements compared to the more cliched aspects...
I don’t know why Time Out of Mind has been so neglected over the years. For some reason it’s never been released on DVD but sound and picture quality on KL’s Blu-ray is excellent. The film has lush production values and is well directed by Robert Siodmak with fluid camera work and excellent...
I had never seen or hear of F.P.1. DOESN'T ANSWER before getting the Kino disc. So glad I took a chance on this because I found it extremely entertaining and absorbing - a fascinating, prophetic, excellent film, well directed with a great cast. The English version of the film is more than an...
All that anti-Nazi music I suppose! For some reason I never saw the film despite it sounding interesting and being a Charlton Heston fan. I’m not sure if it had a wide release in the U.K.
I thought Kino Didn't ship outside the US but I see they now say: "Foreign orders may be declined if we do not have appropriate rights". Interesting! I must try placing an order to the UK.
The rights to "Providence" have always seemed complicated with various production companies involved. Jupiter-Films released it on DVD which came (on first pressings anyway) with a strip of 35mm film. At the time, I asked Jupiter if they were also going to release a Blu-ray but they thought it...
