That scene is not in the recent Australian DVD disaster.
So now we know that the Australian disc is the shorter version.
But with the dreadful quality of that DVD, it doesn't really matter, because it's unwatchable anyway.
Doug.
TCM in Australia runs an old 4:3 mono print.
It was shown here a couple of weeks ago.
I don't know for sure but I suspect our TCM transmission comes out of Asia. (Nudity Pixelated which is most un-Australian)
Doug.
Robert, I understand what you are saying, but,
Pirated, legal or non legal, no self respecting viewer or collector in their right mind would ever want this Australian version of "Raintree County"
It is pure sewerage. It's not even fit to be used as a frisbee or a coaster.
It's certainly one DVD...
I was thinking the same thing Oliver.
They excised the Lion opening and they cut and faded the end title short, plus they eliminated the Overture, etc.
All very clumsy and most unforgiving.
I would love to see Warners throw the book at Compass Media Entertainment.
Doug.
WARNING - WARNING - WARNING!
I just received my allegedly legal ??? copy of the new Australian 'Compass media' DVD.
It is an abomination and should be removed from the marketplace immediately
It is listed on the back cover as 16:9 Widescreen - it is actually 4.3 Letterbox
The Metro Lion has...
Well I've bitten the bullet and just ordered the Australian DVD.
Probably an expensive bullet as I'm really only doing it out of curiosity. (of course in the unlikely event it turns out to be ok then I'll be happy)
I'll report back next week, hopefully with comments and some frame grabs.
Doug.
Regarding the Australian DVD release.
I just phoned Compass Media and yes it has just been released today.
also I've just contacted JB HiFi (one of Australia's largest DVD chains) It's not yet on their website and there are no copies in their stores yet, but I was told it is on their buying...
Still not convinced about Compass Media Entertainment? well try this one.
Compass Media Release Warner release
Now, where does "Raintree County" sit in the scheme of things?
cinerama10 hopefully will come back with some very interesting replies.
Doug.
Legit?
I just had a look at the 'Compass Media Entertainment' web site.
Have a look at this.
Compass Media release Warner Archives release
Ignore my previous post as I don't think Ignorance is the right word anymore.
Doug.
It seems unusual for an otherwise legit DVD production company to announce a release date on a suspected pirate disc.
But, the fact that there is no written or documented Warner involvement and no official censorship classification does seem at odds with this being a legal release.
My thoughts...
It smells of bootleg.
I would be very surprised if Warners would lease out the title to a little known Australian company called 'Compass Media Entertainment'.
The only interesting or curious credit is the mention of a 16:9 enhanced Widescreen image. I wonder what the source is here?
I have...
How about that Allen, apparently we both worked for the same organisation at some stage.
United Artists never owned any theatres in Australia at that time. The Hoyts chain handled all of the UA releases here.
Having access to the minutes would have been very fascinating and most interesting...
Richard Burton almost looks like a Superhero. He's only missing a Hammer or the Big 'S'
Now the boring bit,
I joined UA straight from school, at the tender age of just 16, starting out my years with them as an office boy.
How many other movie loving school leavers at the time could boast...
When I worked at United Artists Australia in '56, we never had a theatre program for "Alexander the Great".
We did have a press book however (as did all films)
It's possible that a program book did exist in the US, as this was one of United Artists first Cinemascope releases.
My only remaining...
There are a large number of HTF members here, including myself, who also have the same two movies, exactly the same roadshow versions, probably exactly the same extras, all taken from exactly the same source, but the only difference is, ours are legal.
They're called Laserdiscs.
Those DVDs...
Wow! I bet Robert Harris would love to get his hands on that one.
Seriously, what you most likely have is a Bootleg DVD (probably Asian) copied from the old MGM/UA extended version Laserdisc.
As a newbie you will soon learn that it is taboo on HTF to promote or encourage others to seek out...
Watched a wonderfully fuzzy 4:3 Pan and Scan print of "Raintree County" on the TCM Channel the other night.
What an experience.
If they ever get around to re-doing the 1951 version of "Show Boat" I hope they retain the Laserdisc's fabulous Stereo track.
