On to a real question.... What's going to happen to the various hardware vendors who either make or plan to make dual-format players? Will these units quickly be pulled, or will dual-format players continue to be made? After all, Pioneer made combo LD/DVD drives for many years.

I guess I'm one of those lackeys. I have two HDTV sets: a Samsung RPTV and an Optoma FPTV, both with ATSC tuners. I watch so little "television" that cable or DTV has limited appeal to me. But here in Boise the broadcast towers are at the top of one of the Rockies at about 5,000 ft above...

Hmm....even that bastion of the MSM, the New York Times, has an obituary notice up now. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/16/te...16toshiba.html

And, by the way, a LOT of things are made in China these days, including my brand-new Toshiba HD-A2. I must be one of the few people here who remember back in the 1950's when "made in Japan" was perceived as a mark of shoddy inferior quality.

I watched Titanic SE the other night on my HD-A2, and IMHO it looked better than did my sole (at moment) HD-DVD, March of the Penguins. This is going to be an interesting transition.

And IIUC, Costco's unlimited return policy was only amended for HDTVs, NOT for other electronics. So if BD ends up killing HD-DVD, couldn't you just take your HD-D2 back to Costco and ask for your money back?

Damn it, damn you, and the horse you rode in on! I was going to sit this out until I read this thread. So HD-DVD isn't quite dead yet...and I only have a 720P projector....and Amazon's shipped price is $239 on the 720P only Toshiba HD-A2....and you get 5 free discs including...

Patrick, It's a little more complicated than that. There are two kinds of HD televisions out there. Right now we are at the threshold of a change over (upgrade if you will) from the "old" 720P sets to the newer 1080P sets. I'm quite happy with my Samsung 720P RP and Optoma 720P FP since...

Well you will just have to keep viewing your R1 SD DVD copy of the African Queen now, won't you?

 At least we have good mixed metaphors in this thread. About the SACD / DVD-A format war.... SACD won in a TKO right out of the box. Speaking broadly, the only people who really care about extreme high fidelity audio are those who listen to classical music (myself included) and some...
