If you can't find more than a couple of titles you like, from the fairly healthy list already available, and the ever growing roster of titles upcoming in the next three or four months, that's your problem, and one that probably isn't shared by more than a couple of other people on this forum...

Oops...my reply got inserted into Crawdaddy's quote. It begins with "Can I get an 'Amen'". Sorry about that! If a mod can correct, or even delete it, that would be fine with me.

Can I get an "Amen"? This kind of stuff is the primary discussion in the hi-def forums. It doesn't end. Even threads on other subjects, have an annoying habit of circling back to one version or another of this topic. I spent some time over the past two weeks, over in the SD forum. It was...

Absolutely. So far as BD not being the "be all, and end all"...well, so far as HDM it is. I don't see anybody else stepping up to the plate. I probably shouldn't have responded to this issue anyway. How will it ever die, if gimps like me keep getting suckered in? It's OVER. It's not...

I agree with you on all those points. Film, after all, is a visual medium. I know a lot of people who feel they need to apologize for their attraction to the "look" of a film, as if they're not really serious about film unless it's ALL about story. There are many aspects to appreciate. It's...

The biggest shame about the format war, is that it got everybody so wound up. It's still evident, even here, on the finest and most balanced forum, and it's reflected in threads and posts that aren't even about the format duel. I wonder how many of us have taken the time to actually enjoy the...

I used that as an on-the-fly term, for lack of a better one, to describe the polar opposite of the "other" approach. Certainly Criterion doesn't succeed with every effort, but I'm referring to an idealized approach to HDM that's opposed to what seems like a mad clamor for sub $100 players and...

That may by true. Perhaps it shouldn't be for everybody. A hobby should be something special. I suppose that the best answer, or answers, offers some kind of happy medium. I was very excited about HDM when it was introduced, because it was cutting edge, just like Criterion is cutting edge in...

So far as HDM adoption is concerned, perhaps we're in too big a hurry for full J6P adoption. Maybe HDM should be super-mainstreamed at a slower rate. It's a different animal than DVD. Perhaps during its formative stages, too much input from J6P could do more harm than good. Remember, that...

I agree, though I often feel that I'll get my butt kicked on these forums for saying such a thing. We're still early in the history of HDM. Of course, nobody wants to pay more than they have to, but perhaps we need a reality check. What incentive is there for these CE companies to spend the R&D...

I understand your point. Perhaps I'm just over anxious for a definite release word from the big three in transition. At least this move indicates something assertive and definite. Of course, I would prefer that they give a BD release date at the same time. It seems that kind of certainty...

It shouldn't be taken as an anti HD remark. I have a respectable HD library, but now that the future of HDM is taking shape, I'd like to see a prompt resolution to the release schedule. Seeing the HD release of 'There Will Be Blood' terminated, indicates that they're getting future releases in...

At least it represents a degree of clarity on where one of the big three are heading, with at least one of their prominent upcoming releases. Would that there be more. In short: glad to hear it, even though there isn't a corresponding Blu date. At least this title is clear of the transition...

It does seem a peculiar and persistent concern lately. Surely everyone agrees that SD DVD is going to be with us as a broad based format for a very, very long time. It would be most odd, and out of step, for the HTF to go whole hog on hi-def at the expense of a format that will be the backbone...

I think that the real key...what is really needed to ease the pain, is a modestly priced dual format player. The HD crowd really need this, to reduce their feeling of having "lost", and speed their first purchase and transition into BD software. Perhaps Toshiba can be of help in this area.

I think the trend will continue to build steam. It's not completely tied to the Christmas season. Plenty of people splurge on such goodies during every other month. In fact, the personal splurges tend to taper off as the holidays approach. The concept of home theater has yet to reach most of...

I couldn't agree more, and maybe it needs to start being voiced more explicitly from us format-neutral, and former HD-only advocates. To me, the most irritating aspect of this obvious winding down of the format, is the lack of forthrightness from the powers that be. They haven't been very...

You'd never know there was a concern about existing inventory, judging by the continuing high prices. The only real break has been the recent 50% off sale at Amazon, and a random sampling of their real-time sales by title, doesn't reveal much a rush to the cash register. And none of the HD sales...

I'm not familiar with the contract specifics, but at this point I wish Toshiba would be big about it, and release Paramount and Universal to publish on Blu-ray. Maybe that's a terribly naive remark on my part, but seriously, what possible expectations can Toshiba have regarding the future of HD...

You're right, in that it's another domino falling. It doesn't have to be a bottom line issue, the industry-wide statement that this announcement makes is enough unto itself. Besides, what do we have in the pipeline from Paramount and Universal, anyway? A handful of titles. True, they're...

Maybe I haven't been listening carefully enough, but I haven't noticed any real gloating. All I've heard are a bunch of people calling it the way they see it. Everything is obviously going Blu's way. On some level that's painful. Until late November, I was HD only, and have amassed a...

Along those lines...things are looking mighty flat for HD at Amazon. I checked the listings a couple of times yesterday and today. Even with the 50% sale, the only two sale titles in the Top 100, were 'Zodiac' and 'Transformers'. The only other HD title, period, was 'Planet Earth'. Not...

Yes, indeed. It's just a matter of time...short time in my opinion, before the Paramount and Universal axes falls. How long do you think, before Blockbuster follows suit? One month, two months?

I disagree. It was very effective in stealing the thunder from the 'Tansformers' release. They knew it would be huge, so they countered one big "glossy" buying opportunity with many "lesser" choices at an attractive price. This is the arena where the BD organization excels. The HD folks have...

Say what? All it would do is shift the math and the strategy of which format eventually wins the contest. Are you saying that "it simply can't happen", that HD could win out over BD? You should elaborate.

I'm not really a psychic, but I did stay at a Holliday Inn Express last night. I Predict that HD-DVD will win the war. It will begin to tilt that way after the president of Sony, and the president of Fox Film Corporation, are arrested together in a sting operation in the men's room at the...

Steve, Nice post. And in my humble opinion, you can't go wrong with the back-door approach, with SD up-converting as the primary goal. I've owned an A1 for over a year, with the fall-back position of having a great up-converting player, even if HD lost the war. I have NO regrets. The "A"...
