Great share and insights Mr. Kimmel. One minor quibble. You site Zegler's age as 20. She is 20 now, she was 17 when she started filming WSS and turned 18 during filming, but aside from that you are spot on in your assessments and always appreciate your insights.

This is definitely my favorite Natalie Wood performance. She just had the whole package. She and McQueen had a chemistry that just radiated from the screen, her scenes with her family and Bosley were both comic and touching. And I have to add that Edie Adams stole all her scenes in her brief...
Here is an interview from 2012 with George Chakiris, where he discusses his disappointment with Rita Moreno's comments about Natalie. He got so upset at one event that he called her out on it backstage and asked her to stop doing it.
I sincerely miss Natalie Wood as well. I would have loved to hear a first-hand account about her life and her experiences making some of the iconic films she was fortunate to have been a part of, particularly "West Side Story" because there is so much conflicting, erroneous information out...
My copy of the new West Side Story soundtrack from Apple Music is in Dolby Atmos/Lossless/Apple Digital Master.
It sounds amazing especially via headphones.
I remember the very, very, veeeeerrrry long lines for "The Exorcist". I believe it was only playing in one theater in NYC, the Cinema I on the Upper East Side. Back then films didn't open in 2,000+ theaters right off the bat.
Thank you!
Yes, those Columbia gatefolds were wonderful. I was 10 when I first saw West Side Story in 1978 and I wanted the soundtrack, so I borrowed it from my local library - it was in a gatefold cover that contained a synopsis of the plot, making of the film, and several black and white...
I have zero interest in trying to prove anyone's opinion wrong or to get anyone to agree with mine. I don't seek validation for my likes or dislikes from anyone here.
But thank you for sharing.
Another scene that I personally found more effective in Spielberg/Kushner's version is the Balcony Scene (Tonight). I really loved how that was shot - - - and beautifully sung by Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler.
I'm going to see it again on the big screen this Wednesday.
I loved the whole "A Boy Like That/I Have A Love" sequence so much more in this version than in the original 1961 film. From the moment "Anita" opens "Maria's" bedroom door to find Tony in the fire escape nervously trying to escape all the way up to the very tear-filled end.
Brilliantly acted...
I love "Any Wednesday" - cute rom-com for its day. The premise today would NOT fly, as it's a bit misogynistic. Jane Fonda was quite funny in it. I believe that "Barefoot in the Park" also played Radio City as well.
Oh I'm sorry for the misunderstanding as well. That's great that you appreciated the magic of seeing a film at Radio City at such a young age. Unfortunately for me, when I came of age, Radio City's glory years were over and we didn't get quite the spectaculars that played there in it's heyday.
"Grease 2" didn't play Radio City. It played the Ziegfeld. I saw it there first in 70mm 6 Track Dolby Stereo. I saw it at the Loew's Paradise on my second viewing because it was closer to home.
I grew up in The Bronx and I've seen quite a few films at the Loew's Paradise, but by that time the theater had been divided into 2 screens. I saw "Grease 2" there in the summer of 1982 in a near-empty house! I was 14 years old!
West Side is my all-time favorite musical theater score so I've created a hybrid playlist that includes my favorite version of songs from each of the existing show/soundtrack recordings. I also created a playlist that includes different pop and jazz covers of the songs from the score.
I never...
West Side Story's box office performance has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the film itself. It truly is one of the best movies of the year and one of the best movie musicals ever made. It deserved every bit of praise it received from the majority of the critics.
Disney has...
They never had the right or consent to do a "sequel". Long Wharf has clearly jumped the gun and now they are back pedaling to save face and saying it is not a sequel to WSS after all. You can't make this shit up...
Theater Changes Tune on West Side Story Sequel
The original 1961 poster for West Side Story was not designed by Saul Bass. That iconic poster is the work of Joseph Caroff. Saul Bass only designed the film's opening and ending credit titles.
Sorry, did not see that Bill Heublig already addressed this...but yeah, not Saul Bass.
Maybe Spielberg should tackle "The King and I" next if only to correct the casting choices made in that film as well: Yul Brynner and Terry Saunders were not Siamese. Rita Moreno and Carlos Rivas were not Burmese. The only one they got half-right was Deborah Kerr, she was British but she...
