My only point is that one person's impressions won't necessarily reflect that of another person. That point remains true. I don't disagree with your points that indications are likely that factors beyond the simple audio codecs were influential in the final sound that caused one theater to sound...
Robert G, Roger Dressler has confirmed what I've said is accurate in several discussions at AVS. DN flag (set to anything other than -31) causes the digital filter in the DD decoding engine to then recalculate the audio data (which *is* bit-for-bit accurate from TrueHD to start with) to...
Hey Paul, the problem with DN isn't that it lowers the dynamic range (volume) by 4 (or more) db... the problem is HOW it does it. It does it by digitally recalculating the audio data to digitally down-scale the waveform. That means that you will NEVER get bit-for-bit accuracy from a...
Yeah, saw that too. Good news, I hope that's representative of how it will look to the rest of us since both the HD DVD and BD will share this VC-1 encode.
Doug, obviously this only has meaning in the context of a PCM master that's 24 bit resolution to begin with. I don't know the situation with this particular master. I was only suggesting a realiable way to determine whether the Dolby TrueHD encode on a particular disc happened to be 16 or 24...
Romar, we might be able to infer that from the average bit-rate of the TrueHD stream once we get to play it on the PS3 and compare against the average bit-rate for a standard 16-bit TrueHD disc. A 24-bit TrueHD should be about twice the bit-rate of a 16 bit.
Regarding 300, screen-shots taken directly from the disc appear to be softer and lacking in detail in comparison to the clarity on some of the downloaded trailers. This was reported at the Blu-ray forum and it's not a slam on the HD DVD "format" as the BD will use the same VC1 stream. It...
