A thread for testing $2000-$2500ish subwoofers

Lambeau ... Your subs have about an extra octave of extension, better mid bass slam, and while a V3601 will have more output near the tuning point, overall your subwoofer system is really well balanced from 7 to 100 Hz in your room. None of the $2500 subs I tested could do that. Their floor is...

Lambeau - I still love pairs of the old Chase CS/SS-18.2 with the MQ 600 amp. In a 2300 cubic foot room, if you have Audyssey XT or XT-32, you are getting solid bass to below 10 Hz. Mid bass is world class, and there is nothing not to like. Other than wanting something new, I can't think of a...

Hi all ... I just posted a new thread in the hardware classifieds with some GREAT prices on both review subs and some speakers we have had here. There is even a lot of FREE stuff for people who can pick it up.

Summary of the SVS SB16 Ultra (in room -3 dB floor of 15.5 Hz). The SVS SB16 Ultra is a GREAT answer to this question: Can I get world class bass in a subwoofer that is basically a 20 inch cube? On music, the Ultra 16 was very close to matching the agility of the EP800, with just a hint of...

Summary of the Power Sound Audio V-3601 (in room - 3dB floor of 14 Hz). The V3601 also excelled with the music clips from Steely Dan, Roger Waters and George Clinton. As an aside, there are several dozen other tracks with which each subwoofer was tested, I just don't want to torture people too...

Summary of the Axiom EP800 Subwoofer system (in room - 3dB floor @ 11.5 Hz): If the Axiom was a car, I would liken it to a Porsche Cayman. It's not the fastest, nor does it corner with the highest "G" force in its price class. What it does is present wonderful balance and make one feel like a...

Jason - That is one excellent post. You experience with the PB-16 is actually the power in the 18-25 Hz range. This is far deeper than most people know, and the EP800 actually goes deeper. The 18-25 Hz range, after one gets the bass above that handled in a linear fashion, is what really makes a...

Hi all ... A quick update ... I have been doing some blind A/B switching between the 3 subs, and am almost done putting together a write up on all three. As stated before, all 3 are incredibly good, with some differences noted on music during blind testing. I also have two major business...

Good morning ... This thread is going to take longer than originally planned, which is hopefully a good thing. Rythmik Audio is interested in either their new FV18HP ($1700 delivered) or FV25HP ($2500 delivered) being added to the test. This may also facilitate the idea of bringing a PB16 Ultra...

Here is the Audyssey XT-32 response curve at my listening position for the SB-16 Ultra ... the -3dB point is at about 15.5 Hz. This is not quite as low as the V-3601 nor the EP-800, but this is still well into the "feel" area for bass:

Jim - I found your review of the SB-16 Ultra. It is an excellent read! You are correct in your assessment of the SVS ... The one review with CEA-2010 measurements (The PB-16 Ultra) show it delivering the type of output we have come to expect the best 18 inch units on the market. It's also...

Last night, we watched the movie "Daredevil" ... yes the one with Affleck and Garner. It has some of the best bass scenes in it, and it also does a good job illustrating how Matt Murdoch got his powers. My poor wife has been trying to follow along with the series, and has never understood how...

Last night was the first "serious" night for torturing the SB-16 Ultra. The Netflix series "Daredevil" is rich in bass from the opening song and throughout each episode. I am watching season 2 now, and have finished a couple of episodes. The SB-16 is somewhat a stealth subwoofer ... it's...

The SB-16 Ultra is unboxed and in the system. Last night was mostly casual watching, so there isn't a lot to report. The hard part is, of course, done. We will be doing some serious testing over the next week.

Now I just need to move a 200 pound subwoofer into the bullpen room so I can put the 125 pound subwoofer in its place. Who needs a gym membership? Dave was gracious enough to send me the SB-16 Ultra to review.

The SVS SB-16 Ultra has arrived. The only down side is I am leaving for a 5 day conference first thing in the morning, so it won't be set up until next Wednesday. Things will pick up a bit after that, as we will have 3 excellent subwoofers to discuss. As of this writing, I can be definitive in...

The next subwoofer looks like it will arrive next week. I have not heard back from Jeff. He could be pretty busy - I have seen posts where guys mention he is "off line" for a couple of weeks getting products ready, so stay tuned. Subwoofers and "fanboys" have always been an interesting study...

I have dropped Jeff Permanian (owner of JTR) a note to see if he would like a Captivator 1400 put into this test. It's $1899 plus shipping, so about the same delivered price as a V3601. It would be fun to test it against the PSA unit.

We have the Klipsch sub here, and for the size and price, it was outclassed by both the Rythmik and Hsu, and even the much smaller Axiom sub delivered an overall better bass experience. The V3601 is well beyond even a pair of the Klipsch subs - it's not even close. We should be seeing an SVS...

I see the time for continued efforts to be nice are going to be a waste of time. You, Stephen, are so far off in your assessment of what is actually occurring in this thread that it's almost scary. Allow an example: I post this: ""Embedded in this thread, and also in the $1000 thread started...

You have not read the thread from the beginning, correct? I am not trying to be rude here, but telling the forum that you "rough calibrated down to 20 Hz" is pretty amusing. We currently have 8 subwoofers in our home calibrated to be linear to 17 Hz and below. Add into this the concept that you...

Perhaps you could educate us. Which subwoofers have you tested? Can you provide some measured response curves for the forum members to see? It is highly likely that a lot of people would be interested in learning which subwoofers lack a balanced response, and which subwoofers HAVE a balanced...

First, it's a REALLY well done series based on the concept that Germany and Japan won World War II. Highly recommended if...
