130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

Well, it's not really that.. they don't mind the help. They just don't want branded UN or US help etc. because they have too much ground resistence because local religious are laying into them that this is Israel's fault, etc. etc. etc. and those organizations are portrayed as supporting them...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

We heard word today that was somewhat mixed. Most of the help from many different countries (US, Japan, UN, etc.) were asked to try and leave.. as soon as possible. While there is plenty of work to be done, the local governments are facing lots of pressure from religious who are demanding that...

That's something a lot of people are discussing now. There is some pressure to turn some areas into wildlife preserves to help rebuild the wildlife lost.

Sandra Bullock also donated $1M post 9-11 to Red Cross. She has been one of Red Cross's largest contributors in the world (period) donating more then many nations. Kudos to those that have money and put it to good cause.

That's what was up with my sister.. they bolted from ground floor up to the fifth floor as the thing came in, and she said it filled up the bulding like a glass, all the way to the 3rd floor. That having been said, she says the work there is slow but steady and that the relief aid coming from...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

First, I agree that we should not veer far, and that we should get back to the point, thus a lot of information below. I would like to add that for those that have read this thread, and are aware, from those who are there, they have estimated and the state department began planning for a...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

Ah, I should have used someone else, at one point, their donation was small. The idea wasn't to call out anyone for their donation, just to say that all of the sizing of who donated what right now doesn't matter a great deal.. none of it will be spent for a fair while until tons of actual man...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

Gosh, I'm going to say something here I seldom say: France has it right. Their government, thus far, has committed $200,000. Not $200M, Two-Hundred-Thousand. And they've got it right. Right now, donating money is just a dick measuring contest, it proves nothing solves no problem. On the...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

I thinkw e're talking about the same thing in a different way.. the amount that the federal government put forward for innauguration stays the same. The ammount that independent donors puts forward varies greatly. (better) I was trying to say the equation with federal dollars output is a bad...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

Just so it can be noted, because sometimes we get into these things and it's tricky.. The cost of innauguration is calculated into the budget the year before hand, and would have been spent (exact same ammount) no matter who was elected, it was already money set aside. The money set aside...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

We just heard from my sister. She says that figuring in the loss of life after wards (ie, people who died in the days following or could not be saved, as well as numbers coming in from outlaying areas.. they are now projecting 450,000. This number is -way- up because of the large number who...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

We just received email from my sis, who's back.. they say the numbers are going to go over 110,000 by morning.. primarily because numbers from smaller islands are finally being computed with guesstimates that they feel are already low.

Because that's the hard work that is about volunteers, not money.. and hten,a fter those kind of things are done, then you get to needing the other. FYI, Water purification units, the large military form, began active service today from US military bases in the region, and volunteers are...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

Right now, there in Those areas, what they really need are able bodies. More then anything else. The removal of dangerous items and the arrival of water purification systems and people to distribute it are of highest concern, more then anything else. There is great concern over the spread of...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

OK. As I stated, I hadn't seen this figure of $7M or $4M, only the total currently committed. So, I contacted those who know. In fact, the Red Cross requested 6.6M, as we provided $400,000 from the state agency of Japan (a US Embassy) which is what it had "in the kitty" allotment basically...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

I think though, if you talk to people who are there, the aid that is being noted right now isn't even for use right now.. there hasn't been an assessment. When I talk to those in the state dept. and other organizations who are there, they will tell you that right now it's such a mess that money...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

I think we're missing something here, though in terms of cost. Right now, aid is (and should be) very low; this is primarily because there hasn't been any damage surveys, or governmental requests. What happens first is that assessments are done and then you decide what you are going to do...

130,000+ people die due to tidal wave in Asia...

We were all talking to my sis today (state dept.) and she was telling us that the embassies tried to alert people, and get the message out; but that many TV stations/radio were all automated and/or unprepared with no way to announce broad enough the news.. and many didn't do anything. More then...
