Great news that they're getting into the early-'50s Allied Artists obscurities. And if they're going to be releasing early Cold War titles (like "Arctic Flight") -- and for that matter '50s George Brent titles -- then here's hoping they dig out "Tangier Incident" ('53).
Thin gruel for today's batch. Just a small handful of new releases as far as I can tell, and a blank page for pre-orders. Does this bode ill for a Halloween batch...?
The Jerusalem File (1972), an MGM release by under-rated director John Flynn, didn't do well at the box office and only saw an overseas early '80s VHS release. Would be nice if this got a resurrection (no pun intended) by the good folks at WAC...
Yes! Thanks for the heads-up. This one hasn't been shown on TCM for a very long time, if ever.
Also up for pre-order are "A Fever in the Blood," an enjoyable movie starring the recently deceased Efrem Zimbalist as a judge with political ambitions, and "The Violent Road," a forgettable copy...
It was distributed by Universal, where Zugsmith distributed a number of his films. As for whether Universal owns it (as opposed to someone's estate, or whoever)... who knows...? I've been whining for a while now for someone to release to DVD another Universal-distributed Zugsmith film: Girl in...
Yeah it's a bit disappointing to see yet another batch of re-treads (excuse me, I meant "Adventure Classics Back in Print" as WB euphemizes...).
Really hoping WB can unearth titles previously un-aired (on TCM or elsewhere in recent memory) and unreleased (in any format), such as RETURN OF THE...
It's a fun, bizarre oddity from Arch Oboler (of "Lights Out" fame). Slows down (and gets maudlin) in parts, but some scenes are very entertaining. A worthwhile MGM rarity for fans of the offbeat.
Well said, Adam_S. Would that Universal (especially) and other studios that are lagging far behind Warner's MOD output -- and family heirs and other laggards sitting on product -- also become "rip-off artists"! Just get the product out there, by hook or by crook, rather than leave these films...
If you're talking to him again, Bob, please a) give him kudos and props, and b) ask him where's that MOD of the elusive "Return of the Terror" (1934) that one of his staffers reportedly wrote in a Facebook post that we might eventually see ...?
Between the pre-orders listed above and the Halloween sale on previously released genre titles I'm losing hope that WAC will have a fresh classic horror release in time for this Halloween... :(
Yes, GET CARTER (the original, not Sly's remake...) is great and gritty, with a great theme tune (which Sly kept in his remake).
Still holding out hope though for an "October suprise" from WAC -- a 2nd "Mystery-Horror" collection, hopefully including the much-rumored resurrection of the elusive...
OK, WA -- no good deed goes unpunished. You guys have done such a terrific job (in my view, at least :)), responding to fans' wishes and unearthing rarities (many, many of which I've bought).
Well... give a fan an inch and he'll ask for a mile. So here goes -- my remaining WA "wish list" (for...
Amen!
(And I'll take the opportunity to say "thanks" to those on this board who also called for THE COUCH to be released. Already placed my order )
All great news. Thanks, Bob. There's a rumor on another board that you may have seen -- that one of WAC's Facebook staffers suggested a possible eventual WAC release of the ultra-rare RETURN OF THE TERROR ('34).
I'd also love to see a WAC release of FBI CODE 98 ('63).
Pete York, I completely agree with what you've written. Lots of participants on this and other forums complain about Warner Archives quality (sometimes) and pricing (often). Maybe it's constructive criticism; that's fine. But I certainly don't want the folks at WA to be discouraged. If some...
Amen and Amen. Though my hat's still off to Warner for being so far ahead of the other studios (especially... Hello, Universal???!) in MOD output.
A brief note re: the UNCLE movie KARATE KILLERS: Be aware there's very little karate and zero killing by karate. If you want to see that in a...
Thanks, guys. I've long been wondering about "Devil Thumbs a Ride" -- Lawrence Tierney's best!
BTW, "The Threat" is good too. Great scene with Charles McGraw bashing the hero with a chair.
Oh, yeah, so glad to see Warner Archive issuing some more musicals. Because you can't ever get to see MGM musicals on TCM (!?)
What about FBI CODE 98 ('63)? What about THE COUCH ('62)? How about some real rarities?
Echoing you on "The Couch," Jobla.
Also, if they're going to release "Operation CIA" then why not "FBI Code 98" (WB, 1963)?
The frustrating thing is, you never know which movies' rights are tied up somewhere outside the studio... It would be great if the studios' home vid divisions...
