Hopefully one of these days Spielberg will have a change of heart regarding deleted scenes and such. The Camelot scenes (after the ferry section) mentioned above are a Spielberg holy grail.
Exactly. The more logical assumption from what the film shows us would be that the machines were buried the same way the aliens were inserted into the machines; riding the lightning.
Maybe it would help some people to look at it this way; Ray, being the selfish bastard that he is, is in perfect character by trying to save his own worthless hide. The kids are just sort of along for the ride. Does that help? :)
