I'm still holding out for the Eisenstein classics 'Ivan the Terrible' parts 1 and 2, and 'Alexander Nevsky'.
These should be possible soonish as all three are undergoing restoration in Russia right now.
And as a guilty pleasure, I'd love all the Lubitsch musicals Jeanette McDonald made with...
My good friend David Hare has told us here that Mosfilm has completed restoration of the two great 'Ivan the Terrible' movies of Sergei Eisenstein. In addition, I've just been informed by Mosfilm that they have embarked on restoration of the wonderful 'Alexander Nevsky',. which boasts what I...
Region coding is stupid but I think Criterion's licencing agreements make that necessary.
Anyway, region-free machines are the way to go .. I shop from the world!
Is there any reason why we're not seeing Eisenstein sound movies on Blu ray? The Criterion DVD box set was pretty sound (despite question-marks over the soundtrack for 'Alexander Nevsky'. I wonder if Blu ray quality source material still exists!
Please, Criterion, how about some Eisenstein ... in particular, Alexander Nevsky and the two Ivan the Terribles.
They're not just great movies, but boast the finest soundtrack music known to man .....
And another neglected favourite of mine, Agnes Varda's 'Lion's Love', which I first saw presented in London at the NFT, in a screening hosted by AgnesVarda herself. come to think of it, that first time (about 40 years ago) was my last viewing thus far as well!
A real classic for either Criterion or Twilight Time to grab ...
The 1972 'Sleuth' starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz
I've also made this recommendation in the 'what would you like to see in Twilight Time' thread .. I don't care who brings it out .. I...
Thanks for the tip .. I tracked down a copy in New Zealand for only $18 including postage. A favourite movie -- I lived for the time near the film's locations and I LOVE Tara FitzGerald!
A good cult title for Criterion would be the 1977 movie 'Lolita' from Adrian Lyne -- a very interesting alternative to the Kubrick movie, truer to the novel and with a knock-out performance from Jeremy Irons. And Melanie Griffith holds her own very capably against the brilliance of Shelley...
By coincidence we watched our Criterion Tales of Hoffman DVD last night.
I was unaware it was released in 70mm ... was this format used for any other Academy ratio (non-Widescreen) movie? The image even on DVD is uncannily precise.
OMG I totally forgot Tales of Hoffmann.
That's such a natural choice given the fine Criterion DVD .. and such a wonderful movie all-round including the glimpse at the end of the great Thomas Beecham. An outstanding release (nice double-meaning).
We certainly wont get James Whale's Show Boat given that it's just become in Warner's Archival DVD program. It defnitely should be on Blu ray though!
I would like to see a couple of rarities ... Agnes Varda's witty 'Lion's Love' and Burning Life (Peter Welz take on Thelma and Louise).
