the main 'problem' scene is is the "Kirk leaves the ship to go on the spacewalk" where the set scaffolding shows badly. Of course, it showed badly in the 4:3 crop, also. All that would have to be done would be to zoom in even further to make the best compromise between cropping and revealing set...
I guess I wasn't clear in my assumption... it wasn't VT vs film assembly, just that if ABC had assembled it, that it might have only been delivered in 4:3. But, if it was projected at the studio as you say, then I stand corrected, but will now have to wonder this:

I'm totally with you there. You get the added scenes, plus it's got the original sound FX mix on it (unlike the DE). I wish we could get an HD version of the ABC/Special Longer Version, but I'm sure that'll never happen. Don't know whether Paramount delivered it to ABC already assembled or if...
