I'm not sure about present-day, but 'back in the day' (think 1994), if the clock battery went bad, some machines simply wouldn't start up if you didn't replace it. I know Power Macintosh 6100 models were notorious for this. I bought a bunch in a surplus auction once and couldn't figure out why...
