It's really amazing that the sound on the Gimmie Shelter DVD is so clear and rich compared to the muddy mess the Ya-Ya's album is. I once brought this up with Steve Hoffman over at DCC and he said that the mix on Ya-Ya's was really suppressed in the lower registers to prevent tonearm skipping...
Hmmm.... Kevin Leonards list misses placing Exile on Main Street in chronological order (between Sticky Fingers and Goats Head), but it does identify it as a classic period album. Maybe as a recommendation it's not the place to start, but after the allure of the singles and radio hits wears off...
