You are so RIGHT about those issues with those FOX DVD'S. "DOLLY" Should have been a two disc set !!!!!!! However, as we all well know "FDS" should have gotten the two disc treatment from UNIVERSAL. First, given it's status as a big money maker for 1961. And making us wait TEN LONG years for...
Well, here we go............. What other musicals are from UNIVERSAL. I loved "SWEET CHARITY" !!!!!! I can't believe the shoddy treatment they gave their three big musicals. "FLOWER DRUM SONG" the best treatment of the three. But, not what it should have been "SWEET CHARITY" was mediocre at...
Lea Salonga and the rest of the cast were nothing short of MAGNIFICENT. The revival got so so reviews. I LOVED IT !!!!! They changed the story somewhat and updated it. I wish more musicals made their way to film. It is a shame so many have not been move into film !!!!
Universal could have included this and it would have made this a TWO-DISC set, like FOX. At least we have the DVD. However, this could have easily been a legacy series. It was certainly worth it. I think this THREAD proves it was a well loved and popular film. Besides, it enjoyed a nice revival...
All along I thought the top GROSSER for UNIVERSAL, was Lana Turner in "IMITATION OF LIFE". I thought that film brought UNIVERSAL back from possible bankruptcy in '59 ?? And it resurrected Turner's career as well. I thought it was the top grosser ?? I have always read that ROSS HUNTER, negotiated...
I am so happy to have this movie and such a great transfer. But I would have been ecstatic with all of those as extras on a 2-disc set. Too bad this wasn't a Fox movie, we know we would have had all of this. When one hears that this stuff is available and left out of a special edition, it is...
So, there was a ROADSHOW VERSION !!!!! See another EXTRA UNIVERSAL, could have added !!!!! WHY WAS THIS NOT A LEGACY VERSION, like "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD", and "DOUBLE INDEMNITY" ?? THERE WAS enough material to make two discs, for this film, if FOX could do it, so could UNIVERSAL, if they had...
THANK YOU ROBERT SIEGEL, I couldn't agree with you more. For a film of the stature from RNH, I feel that UNIVERSAL, did a minimal job for the price they charged for this DVD. And you compare the amount of time put in by FOX. THERE IS NO COMPARISON !!!!!!!! This film deserved THE TWO DISC...
I stand corrected I guess. At the time I saw it I was 8 years old. I remember only the adds in the local paper, and it seemed as if it ran forever. I thought it was reserved seat engagement. I was wrong I guess. Many big films of that nature were back then, like "SOUTH PACIFIC", "OKLAHOMA"...
I think, the comparisons of FOX'S treatment versus UNIVERSAL are AMAZING. I am disappointed in UNIVERSAL overall treatment of "FLOWER DRUM SONG". I feel they should have pulled out all of the stops for this one. As it was a top grossing film for them in the early 60's. I remember as a kid it...
I was lucky enough to see the REVIVAL of "FLOWER DRUM SONG", a few years ago on Broadway. It bore, little resemblance to the film version. I assume the film version follows the original Broadway production ? I did enjoy the revival that DAVID HARRY HWANG, did with Lea Salonga. I wish they would...
Why is the TRAILER missing as an extra in this DVD ?? Or is it an EASTER EGG ? Does anyone else have the trailer ?? Or am I not looking in the correct spot ?? HELP...................
From yesterdays NY TIMES, a RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN DVD REVIEW OF THE WHOLE COLLECTION FROM UNIVERSAL AND FOX......... http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/14/movies/14dvd.html
I just watched a few of the extras. GORGEOUS TRANSFER, well worth THE TEN YEAR WAIT (THE ADVENT OF DVD). I wish James Shigeta would have been interviewed !!!!!! This is ONE OF MY FAVORITE MUSICALS, from childhood. I remember seeing it on the BIG SCREEN as a child. I am thrilled with it ...
This may have been discussed before. Here goes, I know "FLOWER DRUM SONG" was from UNIVERSAL. WERE the other four, "OKLAHOMA", "KING AND I", "CAROUSEL", and "SOUTH PACIFIC" owned by "GOLDWYN" and Fox obtained the rights. Why was "FLOWER DRUM SONG" song a UNIVERSAL production instead of GOLDWYN...
I can hardly wait. However, I wish they would have included scenes from both versions of THE BROADWAY SHOWS, like the FOX series will be doing!!!!!! I have waited far too long for this set.
ROBERT, I am with YOU A 100 PER CENT, I CAN HARDLY WAIT, THE ANTICIPATION IS THE SAME, I FELT, WHEN, THEY FINALLY RELEASED THAT HAMMER COLLECTION !!!!!!!!!!!! I AM ECSTASTIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW MUCH LONGER ??????????????
To AlanP -- The so-called revival of this show wasn't really a revival -- it was a total rewrite, with the old songs crammed into a whole new story. If you liked the new version, you may not like the real thing, because a lot of people who liked the real thing hated the new version...
All I can say is WHAT TOOK SO LONG FOR THIS TO FINALLY ARRIVE ON DVD ?? I saw the revival and it was SPECTACULAR on Broadway as few years back. It was AMAZING. Universal is so SLOW in releasing its BEST VINTAGE FILMS. This one is finally coming, I AM THRILLED BEYOND BELIEF !!!!!!!
