As as audience member, though, I allow it because it's basically the only coincidence. Everything that happens after they steal it is causation, not coincidence.
When she's talking to Han in the cockpit, it's pretty clear that she was hired to do quite a bit of work on the Falcon while it sat...
Ahead of The Rise of Skywalker on Thursday, I'm attempting to re-watch all of the previous live action Star Wars movies in chronological order.
The Phantom Menace (in 4K on Disney+ Streaming App)
Attack of the Clones (in 4K on Disney+ Streaming App)
Revenge of the Sith (in 4K on Disney+...
The Force is With Film! Dan Mindel on Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Good article on the Kodak Motion Picture film website about the cinematography of The Force Awakens
With Skyfall, my understanding is that they took the ARRIRAW data and outputted it to 4K. The resolution for ARRIRAW with spherical lenses is 2880 x 1620, or about 2.8k. I believe they cropped to 2880 x 1516 and upscaled to 4K for IMAX at a 1.9:1 aspect ratio, and then further cropped to 2.40:1...
Thanks for sharing, Josh. I wonder if the visual effects work was also completed at 2K, or if it was only the final color timing that was done in 2K. If it's the former, 2K is probably the best we're going to get for this film. If it's the later, they could create a 4K version down the road...
It made $66 million in its first four days in China. The original trilogy never received a proper theatrical release in the country, so there's no nostalgia to bank on like most of the rest of the world. The last Star Wars movie to be released in China, Revenge of the Sith, only grossed $11.7...
I know we're just going to spin around and around on Rey's parentage until Episode VIII comes out and either answers the question or doesn't, but...
What if Rey's mom was either one of Luke's students or a teacher alongside him? She discovers she's pregnant and doesn't want this life for her...
It's kind of interesting how the choice of directors for this trilogy mirror the choice of directors for the original trilogy:
First movie: Director with both critical and popular name recognition re-purposes elements of old favorites to create a massive new hit.
Second movie: Auteur builds...
Yes, when Gone with the Wind was released in December of 1939, the FCC was still three years away from approving the NTSC standard for broadcast television and America was still 16 years away from reaching the point where more than half its households had a television.
For most people during...
There's something about Star Wars that seems to make people abandon all sense of context or proportion. The "white slavers" thing was an attempt at humor on Lucas's part that misfired, that he knew misfired before he even completed the sentence (as is obvious on the video), and that Charlie Rose...
I appreciate his candor. I don't need him to venerate The Force Awakens to enjoy it, and I'm always interested to hear what he has to say when it comes to Star Wars. It's a similar thing to when fans get bent out of shape because Harrison Ford looked at the new film as a big easy paycheck and...
If this were one of the side projects, like Rogue One, I would expect and hope that she wasn't related to anyone. But the core saga is the story of Anakin Skywalker and his descendants. A big surprise only lasts as long as the opening night. Having Rey be a Skywalker (through Luke or Leia) is...
Another quick note: There were sold out shows at the mall multiplex I went to tonight, and my theater was close to sold out. On a Wednesday. On its thirteenth day in theaters.
I saw it for the second time tonight. Just as fun a ride as the first time, and I may have enjoyed it more since it wasn't clashing with my expectations and I knew what to expect in terms of how the narrative was structured.
One thing I paid attention to this time is Finn regaining...
My copy of The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrived today. The OCD side of me is a little irked that it's not the same shape as the earlier "Art of" books, but otherwise it's absolutely beautiful so far.
One thing that really stood out to me is how much more interesting the original...
...but it will still be under construction, so they have a chance to destroy it before it becomes operational. But, as they'll discover when the entire fleet comes out of hyperspace in its orbit, it's ALREADY operational. And Rey will have a terrible premonition that that the Falcon is going to...
So far it's been tracking remarkably like Avatar, only from a much higher starting point. Should that continue, it will top $400 million after Friday and half a billion after Saturday.
I think part of why John Williams is so eager to come back is the simple scale of the endeavor; how often do you get to musically tell a story of three generations of a family and the calamities it caused and lived through via nine compositions across over forty years?
It's worth remembering that Abrams said that there were reasons that no surnames were specified for Rey and Finn.
We now know why Finn didn't have one; because the First Order never game him one. Even his first name is just a bowdlerization of his serial number.
With Rey, the question was...
The question of whether Vader was redeemed or not is almost irrelevant for me. He completed his destiny, because by destroying the Emperor he brought balance to the Force.
What it all comes back to is that the execution of the reveal will be far more important that whatever the reveal turns out to be. If you sell it right, you can pull off most of these competing theories in a compelling way.
