It's not just that it's a clunky line. The movie has plenty of clunky lines. It's that it's so oblivious to the emotions of the moment.
Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are locked in a duel that both fully believe will be a battle to the death. Anakin, a cauldron of rage, knows he's crossed...
Ahead of The Rise of Skywalker one week from tomorrow, I'm attempting to re-watch all of the previous live action Star Wars movies in chronological order.
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
There has been a lot of discussion in the last month or two about what qualifies as cinema. For all...
My favorite moment in the film is the scene between Padme and Anakin with Anakin alone in the Temple spire and Padme in her apartment. The editing, the lighting, the music all came together to express something entirely cinematic in nature. That was the moment that reminded me why Lucas is...
I thought the first half of the story was much better in the novel, where it was fleshed out and engaging rather than D.O.A. like in the movie. But the last half of the story was condensed into the last hundred pages of the book, and can't compete with the visceral power of the film in SHOWING...
And my argument is that by using any means possible to stop Sidious, he would have HAD to use the Dark Side. As it is, Yoda clearly gave it his all to stop Sidious, and retreated only when knowing his death would be more negative for the galaxy than his retreat would.
Well, here's the thing: if Yoda had cheated and defeated Sidious, but had to breach his honor to do so, who's to say that the galaxy wouldn't have been even more devastated by under the iron grip of Dark Yoda? And if Obi-Wan had killed Vader outright, would the Emperor have EVER been...
The consequence of a single battle is insignificant to the Force;) If the Jedi cheated, they would have won the battle, but lost the war because they would no longer be Jedi on the other side of it.
In fact, looking back at the movie, the only thing that didn't go according to Palpatine's plan was Obi-Wan. The Dooku trap was designed for Obi-Wan to bite the dust. But he didn't dominate Anakin's soul enough by that point to make him leave his mentor behind. First Grevious then Order 66 were...
One scene in the novelization I really liked was the one where Anakin finds Threepio before going to the hallway to find Padme. "Officially she's at the Naboo embassy planning a statement about tomorrow's Security Act." and then he goes into all of these pleasantries while Anakin is flustered...
This is from Matt Stover's adaptation, yes? I have it but am saving it until my day job starts, as it involves a great deal of sitting around on the slow days. I'm a big fan of his original "Star Wars" books, so I have high hopes for this one.
That was one of the biggest bits of genius for me. Obi-Wan exploited Anakin's pain over his mother's death to provide Luke with sanctuary at the ONE place Vader would never ever return to. Which brings me to another thing I love: the table scene. When the Jedi are reduced to Yoda and Obi-Wan...
Just had my second viewing today. Unfortunately, there was an asshole behind me that alternated between making fun of the earnest moments and piecing together the saga verbally DURING the movie. Made me glad that my first audience was polite, if a bit restrained for my tastes. My new favorite...
You know what's amazing? AICN has a talkback and the "Lucas raped my childhood" posts are in the minority. The majority of the talkback is all of these people debating all the minor plot points it raised. What a beautiful thing to see; Star Wars is back.
Quote:
Luke referencing Dagobah ... but clearly Obi-Wan does not take young Luke to Dagobah to drop Yoda off, so this line really means nothing.
How do we know that? Yoda had to get dropped off at some point. Wasn't there a shot in the trailer of the Tantive IV approaching...
I didn't know about those scenes; I mean I knew Mon Mothma was supposed to be in the film and didn't see here, but didn't know that's what those were for. It would have definitely added some dimension to her character. She goes from strong willed and firm leader in TPM to a naive, weak...
I think Padme will go down as one of the most useless bitches in film history.;) She reminds me very much of the woman who get sucked in every time their abusive alcoholic husbands come crawling back begging for forgiveness. I don't actually think it's a bad portrayal, either. It just seems off...
Well, I liked it. But this is probably the first Star Wars movie I didn't love right off the bad. I think the main reason is that the parts that are supposed to be fun (ie. the first third of the movie) were horribly scripted and the parts that were excellent (ie. the last third of the movie)...
