I agree that the lack of communication from these studios is frustrating, but while I can't say anything more, I do know that specific titles are currently being worked on for BD release by both studios. It's not like they are stitting on their hands and thinking about what they want to do, they...
Dave- I understand your frustration, but I can assure you that titles are being worked on by both studios. Universal has a pretty big learning curve to move their interactivity from HDi to BD-J. I'm expecting some announcements in the next few weeks.
Well said. Keep in mind that Microsoft doesn't own any content. They have nothing to stream to you. They rely on the media companies to supply the content. Just like MS hedged their bets so are the media companies. Does the fact that Disney and Lionsgate are suppling HD content to XBOX live mean...
I agree with Bryan. HD DVD didn't have the studio support that's why it lost. I don't think HW pricing had anything to do with it. If the studios where there, they sales would have been there, and if the sales were there they HW manufactures would have come. For example Denon still sees a market...
Looks like some studios will be double dipping and putting BD live features on previously released titles: Here Comes the Reaming: Blu-ray Movie Rereleases Coming with BD-Live
True, but the Panasonic will be out sooner, and while the PS3 is a great machine, I have been a lot more impressed by Panasonics standalone players over Sony's (BD10 v S300)
I wouldn't be suprised to see Toshiba release BD players at some point in the future. I'm not sure if the delay will be due to politics, business reasons or a little of both. As much as a Toshiba combo player would be nice, I just don't see a market for one. It would make them too expensive to...
Some interesting articles about winning and losing from the CEOs involved: Toshiba: Toshiba's Plan for Life After HD DVD - WSJ.com Sony: How Sony won the high-def DVD war - Feb. 29, 2008
Not to be disrespectful, but HD DVD was the ideal choice for you. By all means enjoy the titles you have and feel free to pick up some you want on sale (I have!), but if you want HD there is nothing wrong with going BD. The PS3 is a great player at a great price, and there are plenty of places...
During the format war this would have worked to help one format over the other, but I don't think this will really help with HD over DVD now. If consumers aren't jumping to HDM for the new releases, why will they jump to HDM for titles that they already own (unless there are some outstanding...
This is more Paramount than Toshiba. I actually think Toshiba has acted as best they could under the circumstances. It was either take a spoiler role or bow out gracefully and they bowed out gracefully while still offering warranty support. This set would have been out months ago had Paramount...
There was a problem with the coating on one pressing of a title (I can't remember which one). It was a manufacturing defect with that one specific production run on a specific disc. This lead to untrue rumors about BD discs being subject to laser rot. The only issue you may have with leaving...
Sorry about the 5%, was thinking off the 50/50. The 55/45 does not take into account the titles that were only released on HD DVD. With those included its 51/49 (BD/HD DVD). I don't think the 2 month jump had much of an impact considering that the vast majority of WB titles out during the first...
No problem, it just takes an hour with Excel to do it, and will my schedule 2 days to find that hour!:D I ran the numbers and made the following judgment calls in how I assimilated the data (I double anyone will disagree with any of them, I just want to have full disclosure) I removed any...
I would guess that the titles in the pipeline are only ones that were in the works before the annoucement? That would mean that some more recent titles will take a few extra months to get out on BD (assuming the legal mumbo-jumbo is sorted out).
This is up to BD. For better or worse consumers seem to be happy with DVD. BD has to step up and give people a reason to switch. This will be an interesting topic to discuss over the next few months. I'm not sure what the right course of action is (exclusive features, different release windows...
I actually agree. I wish the Paramount and Universal would quickly announce individual titles for HD DVD and BD so I know what will be available on BD. In the absense of that announcement I have to assume that best case it will be a few months for the new titles to be released on BD based on...
While some consumers may be bitter, I don't believe that any lost. I bought both formats. I'm still buying some exclusive HD DVDs and some that I don't have at fire sale prices. They will play fine for years to come (along with my LDs). Most of the software/hardware I have on both formats I...
Well said. As to those who bring up consumer choice, this was never about the consumers, and if you still insist it is, then consumers didn't choose either format (at least not yet).
My guess is things will wrap up/light get turned off in June. That gives enough time to have an orderly exit for Toshiba, the studios and the retailers. I am willing to bet that most titles announced for release over the next month or two will probably get released as planned. No sure about WBs...
That about sums it up. Short of when they initially launched the real original discussions happened around the time Paramount and WB went from neutral to exclusive. Other than that I felt like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.
A few years from now I hope someone unaffiliated with the format war can interview everyone involved and write a book about what happened behind the scenes with both formats. I bet there would be some suprises on both sides. I bet it would make for a good read...at least for us HT geeks.
I wondered why BD didn't go after Toshiba instead of WB. Offering them a share of the patent pool, or the ability to make the first 200,000 players royalty free. I wonder how hard it would be to convert their production lines to BD? Could it be all it rakes is a few production and hardware...
