Downloads aren't the future that the studios dream about. Streaming media is. Don't worry about your hard drive crashing because you won't be storing your own movies at all -- they'll be making you pay anytime you want to watch something (on the other hand, there'll probably be Netflix-style...

So should I be playing SD discs on my HD-A2 instead of my PS3? :) (I'm asking about the upconversion quality; not any foolish mumbo-jumbo about SD incompatibility with BD players.)

Trying to undercut hardware prices without also undercutting software prices was a plan that was doomed to fail.

Is WB having a b1g1 on their WHV site, or are you guys talking about the Amazon sales? IMO combo players will come way down in price before either side gives up the ghost in the format war. I expect BD and HD-DVD to co-exist for a good long time to come. They won't go the way of SACD/...

Pretty soon we'll have to change the title of this thread to include the words "Bill Hunt" in it somewhere. . .

Doesn't Fry's website (outpost.com?) have the same prices as their B&M stores?

(EDIT: Whoops, meant to post this in the other thread. But I'll leave it here too 'cause it's just so wacky!) This just in from the Spanish Inquisition Dept. . .the PS3 outsold the Wii in Japan last week. Zounds!

Um. . .don't ask me who cares and so what, I was just responding to Robert's question. I don't particularly care how many companies are making HD-DVD players as long as Toshiba's selling 'em so cheaply. :) The only issue I can see is that other manufacturers, if there is some effect they...

Toshiba can afford to sell a player at cost because it'll make money on the software royalties. Other manufacturers, who would have to charge enough for a player to make a profit on it, would have to offer added value over the Toshiba players in order to make creating and selling the product...

Go nuts, man -- I'm all for comedy! ;) But I'm totally serious about what I said. The PS3 is a ridiculous value for what it does. The fact that not everyone cares about what it does is completely irrelevant. Like I said -- the fact that the average person isn't interested in a $50,000...

I agree that firmware updates are a hassle, but considering the fact that even the $350 laptop I got at Walmart has a CD burner and wireless networking built in, burning a CD from a downloaded ISO may be more convenient for a lot of people than setting up an extra ethernet connection in their...

There's nothing uncanny about it -- they can sell the players so cheaply because they plan to make up the difference in royalty payments on the technology from the content providers. :) My $98 HD-A2 was a great value (today I'm leaning towards keeping it ;) ). On the other hand, so was my...

Shopping at locally owned stores instead of Walmart is great, but for most people the other choices are Target or Kohls or Kmart or grocery chains, not some long-running mom & pop operation. $4 generic prescriptions for everyone goes a long way towards improving Walmart's image in my book.

Those of you who think that price is the be-all end-all are forgetting the one thing that trumps it: convenience. How quickly we forget the success of iPods (and failure of DVD-A/ SACD, even after prices came down). Not to mention DiVX with its various hassles. When the holidays roll...

Ric, Does your old TV have a DVI port? If so, then you can upconvert SD-DVDs using an HDMI->DVI adapter or HDMI->DVI cable. BTW, did I mention that people who own HD-DVD players are my FAVORITE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD??? ;)

Dibs! :D Maybe then I'd get around to buying a TV. (PS3 games just aren't cutting it on my old 30" SDTV. . .)
