Anyone who loves seeing the blissful Myrna Loy should read her autobiography 'Myrna Loy - Being and Believing'. It's a sensational read, about the career and beliefs of a strong intelligent and independent woman.
Well Robert, I now understant totally your expensive Oled addiction.
We went over to my son's home Friday night for dinner and movie .. .watched a fine new movie, 'Operation Mincemeat'. But of course, it being that night, I also had on a stick 'The Trolley Song', which I had carefully excerpted...
While searching for Andre Previn's memoirs, take a look also for the equally enjoyable 'The Street Where I Live' by Alan Jay Lerner. Pure bliss too, for lovers of 'My Fair Lady' and everyone else of sense and sensibility. And of course, the fusion of Lerner and Previn created cinema magic.
Barry gave me his copy of Andre's memoir of his Hollywood years, 'No Minor
Chords'. Only a paperback, but the print resolution is pretty good. At least 2K.
Well, Mark, maybe it was just the night .... after reading your post, I'll try to listen again with
new ears. We did watch it with visiting friends who couldn't stop talking and commenting throughout, so a bit of quiet might help. I'm a big Previn fan, so I should give him another chance. Andre...
I've seen it several times. Last time was just a couple of weeks back. I still loved it, but the soundtrack seemed so out of place... very mediocre. Still eminently worth viewing though.
So when my Panasonic plasma expires, I'll just have to go down the OLED path. I just bought a brand new La Pavoni heat exchanger espresso machine, which cost exactly the same as my son's 65 inch Lg Oled. Coffee comes first of course ... to keep you awake for the night's entertainment!
I thought of you, Robert, yesterday, when my son was telling me of his new purchase for his recently-bought home in Melbourne, Australia ... a 65 inch LG Oled. He watched a nature show and said the physical presence amounted to hyper-realism. And he loves the remote control .. and point-and-move...
Aren't those OLEDs meant to be good for about 100,000 hours?
My old Panasonic plasma by the way is still looking fine after 11 years. It's our 'regular' sitting-room screen when not using the 150-inch projector system in our larger living room.
Still on definitions, but to move sideways away from noir for a moment ... I always consider Bad Day at Black Rock at a truly great Western. But I guess the post-war era would disqualify it for some.
I totally agree with you on 'High Noon'. It tops them all, even 'The Big Country'.
I particularly like the fact that it's acted in 'real time' as marked by the omnipresent clock,as we watch that big hand moving along, nearing HIgh Noon.
Yes, Gary Cooper was a tad too old for the lovely Grace...
In Australia you're only eligible for medicare after you're born. Which is very prejudicial to the unborn/unconceived.
But at least, once you're born, full health benefits continue for life, regardless of income status. And prescription drug benefits. My weekly rheumatioid arthritis drugs...
I loved The Straight Story. Terrific tale. I first saw it solely because of my interest in actor Richard Farnsworth, who had delivered such a lyrical performance as Matthew Cuthbert in the wonderful Canadian television adaptation of 'Anne of Green Gables'. Both, especially 'Anne' deverve...
I'm interested, when you get around to it, to how you evaluate the two versions of 'Shane'. Both of course are legit -- Widescreen is as first released, and Academy as composed and shot. One of the more interesting results of the seemingly overnight Hollywood switch to widescreen.
Even though I...
Marilyn Horne did her dubbing for Carmen Jones when very young --- maybe still at juillard -- and when she sang as a soprano instead of the mezzo we love so much. A favourite partner always of Joan Sutherland.
Is that truly incestuous? Only in the eyes of the law in some territories. In Australia an uncle can marry a niece (or an aunt her nephew) quite legally, and the same is true in lots of countries. Maybe not in the USA though, which has some very odd rules re legal relationships.
I've always loved Anne Baxter. Just one very minor quible about her appearance -- does anyone else think her head sometimes appears too large in proportion to the rest of her body? I think that shows in the pic from 'Yellow Sky' and it's very noticeable in 'All About Eve'. But when you come...
'Where Eagles Dare' may be only a so-so Blu ray, better than mediocre, and its drawbacks are quickly forgotten when you're into the runaway romp of the adventure. Colossal movie ! And a chance to see the work of Patrick Wymark, who was so good in the great TV series 'The Power Game' (I still...
My wife Robyn dislikes war movies, ,though she will watch The Dam Busters and Where Eagles Dare.
But she was totally captured by the quiet desperate heroism of 'Halls of Montezuma' and by Richard Widmark's brilliantly understated acting. What a movie!
I know very well, Matt, when you reflect on the injustices done to your native peoples.
Here in Australia we're really only starting to come to terms with what evils were done when we displaced our Aboriginals from their historic lands. It does colour our viewing of so many films .. including...
'Clementine' has long been a favourite of mine .. the only role Mature did which I can stand!
You still haven't got around to my all-time favourite -- 'The Big Country'. But you're doing well in mowing down that list ..... tall poppies, each and every one.
I have the single disc 2015 Studio Canal disc, which is magnificent. Checking on Amazon UK, I find the only thing I'm missing from the four-disc edition is the soundtrack CD, which I would love to have. Maybe I'll find that somewhere on Ebay or such.
Anyway, if no-one has this improved...
In random order? Surely 'The Big Country' deserves a higher ranking. I'd place that alongside High Noon as my all time favourites.
But as we must always remember, to each his/her own.
