I like Ars reviews because they are selective about films they review, and have a perspective influenced by being a tech site, so usually I try to read their stuff.

Josh, you may want to watch the anime (first film) now, at least for comparison purposes. I don't think having seen the live action movie will ruin it.
Since "don't judge a book by its cover" and keeping an open mind are integral parts of my philosophy on life, I too find it troubling that I can't get past this one.

I do, to be able to discuss it. But I don't think it will change my perspective on the casting issue. The fact that they have to do any rationalization of the casting decision will always be problematic, at the very least.

Based on this article, and other reviews, it sounds like the filmmakers actually went counter to Oshii's vision of the character history. If that's the case, I wonder what he would say about it now?

Being a fan of the anime doesn't help. I would be curious to see how many feel as I do, but are not fans of the anime or the printed source material, and thus object with slightly fewer personal stakes in the issue.
