Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Hopefully, the extra time is being used for remastering. As I mentioned in another thread, Seasons 13 and 14 were just released in Germany. A friend there told me they were uncut, but not remastered. He was very disappointed with the picture quality.

Yes, some of the color episodes in that set were shorter. Perhaps they were the syndicated versions which run about 46 minutes and have extra commercial breaks.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I'm anxiously awaiting an announcement for Season 12, the first of the color seasons. I'm hoping they will continue to offer uncut, remastered episodes as nice as the b+w seasons.

Do you think Gunsmoke is in the same situation as Bonanza? It's been quite a while since the last release (Season 9).

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

My favorite season is Season 1, mainly because many of the stories were adapted from Erle Stanley Gardner's novels. Future seasons had more stories written for the series by other writers that, in many cases, were not as interesting as those based on the Gardner books.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Another reason for starting Perry Mason at the beginning is that most of the first season shows were based on Erle Stanley Gardner's original novels. Later seasons relied on new writers and the series, while still better than most, wasn't quite as good. I've read Raymond Burr admitted that...

Thanks for the detailed reply, smithb. I have thought about upgrading to an Oppo, but have also read comments about SD discs looking worse on a Blu Ray player. It sounds like an Oppo would let me still enjoy the bulk of my collection while giving me the option to add an occasional Blu Ray disc.

Has anyone compared how a SD set like Gunsmoke or Perry Mason looks when played on both a regular DVD player and a Blu Ray player? I'm wondering if the upgrade would be worth the investment since the type of series I collect will probably never be converted to HD. John

After all the b+w releases announced yesterday, I'm not surprised you are in a good mood. I hope I live long enough to see the color seasons of Gunsmoke released as they are always cut when shown in syndication. John

Gary: Any idea on whether CBS/Paramount will continue with Gunsmoke after Season 6? Seasons 7-11 were full-hour b+w episodes. Seasons 12-20 were full-hour color episodes. John

The Gallant Men, the re-issue of The Fugitive box set, Gunsmoke Season 6/Volume 2, and Perry Mason Season 7/Volume 2. A real good day for fans of b+w shows.

Bourbon Street Beat from WB. More Peyton Place. Finish Perry Mason.
