The Blu-ray couldn't have come at a better time for me. My old DVD won't play past the half-way point. I'm looking forward to another of those computer-registered Technicolor OCNs. The resolution (and Colors) have been amazing!
Incidentally, forget the story and silly antics of this movie, the...
Matthew Broderick in the alternate version of THE MUSIC MAN was completely miscast. Professor Harold Hill is a con man. Mathew is a kind, pleasant, wouldn't-hurt-anyone person.
Thanks for the "timelines" Mr Harris. Re comments about the yellow/ urine / sepia look of these old prints, we've had this discussion before. Didn't we decide that the best way to see how they really looked is in a darkened cinema with carbon arc projection. (And of course color appreciation has...
This film (and this print I presume) is available on streaming in Australia (SBS On-demand). Like you, Mr Harris, I was certain that I was watching a three-strip Technicolor print. It looks beautiful.
Reading through these postings I’m obviously a lot older than anyone else. My collection (which I haven’t added to in 50 years), is mainly original (1930s and ’40s) issues of newspaper strips like Mandrake, The Phantom, Flash Gordon, Buz Sawyer, et al. Also Famous Funnies, Tip Top, etc. which...
It used to be common practice to put an ax through old excessive prints that had been written off in the books prior to their being sent to the city dump. I presume these OCNs may have been written off.
(When I collected 35mm films I had many odd reels with repairable ax cuts. Collectors used to...
A truly delightful film (I'm speaking of the German version). One interesting technical highlight is that it has one of the longest synchronized continuous tracking shots that I've ever seen during the song "Just Once for all Time".
I've still got the laser disc release of this film (which is pretty poor quality). I've already ordered my copy and am hoping for a much better print. Great movie!
I view my movies 3 metres from a 55-inch Panasonic OLED. At this distance I don’t see any difference in resolution between 2K and 4K discs. As for HDR, sometimes it looks good, at other times it sometimes causes eye-strain. I bought my 4K player 2 years ago and no longer bother to buy the more...
I have the DVD of MURDER AT THE VANITIES (part of the "Pre Code Hollywood" set. It's a most entertaining film and features the first performance of Sam Coslows's classic song "Cocktails for Two" sung by Carl Brisson. (Never the same song after the Spike Jones' version!)
Regarding picture...
All of mine but one failed. I also lost 3 from the WB Gangster sets. But spare a thought for those of us outside of the U.S. Warners won't replace our failed discs because, theoretically, the discs were not meant to be sold outside the USA.
With DVD and Blu-ray sales on an ever declining slope, it's sad that most of the wish lists here must be seen as wishful thinking. It's tragic, but our days are numbered.
Re WOWHD: I find that in most cases the discs are usually about the same as Amazon prices (except when Amazon have specials) but I save on free postage to Australia. In the several years I've been using them they've never let me down and I generally land them cheaper than anywhere else. (Don't...
Reading through this complete post it would appear that too many people are concerned about its factual portrayal of Porter's life (and his sexual orientation). Come on folks, it's a Hollywood musical, not a documentary. As for the presentation of the musical numbers, I much prefer them to the...
I used to order laser discs by phone from Ken Crane from Australia. I used to get up at 4.00 am Melbourne-time to match the time zone when I wanted to get in early for a sale item..
Buying some of those little-known European labels can sometimes be a trap. I bought "Valmont" (Colin Firth / Annette Bening) on the Spanish Divisa label and the Spanish subtitles cannot in any way be turned off.
I just watched it right through. A great example of 1950s' Technicolor. Mr Harris gives the sound a 5, but I thought it was slightly distorted. Not worth more than 4 at most in my book but the beautiful print makes it all worthwhile.
I would say so. I had 8mm and 16mm projectors long before there was any other form of movie collecting. My first full length movie (after I had a collection of shorts) was a 16mm print of the 1934 British musical "Sing as We Go" starring Gracie Fields. When the first primitive reel-to-reel video...
It would be wonderful if even a fraction of the films being listed here are ever released, either on Blu or UHD. But the sad reality is that as time goes by, the cost-return for their release on these formats becomes less and less until their release becomes financially impossible. Sad!

Umbrella Entertainment are soon to release Flower Drum Song and Thoroughly Modern Millie as a double. Does anyone know if Flower Drum is from the same source as the one being reviewed here?
I've personally projected IB Technicolor prints with carbon, incandescent and Xenon light sources. Their appearance on the screen is significantly different in each case. These old IB prints don't look so yellow with carbon arc (which is what they were balanced for. Also, the eye acclimatises...
