Absolutely bloody spectacular.
The Barefoot Contessa and Moby Dick are must-haves for me. Might get I Want To Live! and The Keys to the Kingdom as well later.
Classic films released by Criterion this year:
In a Lonely Place
The Naked Island
The Executioner (October)
Tree of Wooden Clogs (October)
La chienne
McCabe & Mrs. Miller (October)
Woman in the Dunes (August)
Le amiche
Here Comes Mr. Jordan
Dr. Strangelove
A Touch of Zen
Chimes at Midnight...
Good question. I've been waiting for a Criterion release for years now. I'm not fond of Alliance's bilingual arts (shallow reasoning, I know, but that's the truth).
This is unmissable. Can't wait to see Hepburn and O'Toole tearing the screen with their greatness in HD. And that John Barry score in lossless audio... Af.
This is good news. I might upgrade. When I first watched the film on TV, I thought the still scenes were a stylistic choice! I had no idea there were parts of the actual film missing.
Err... So I will have to re-buy Johnny Guitar because they didn't release it properly the first time? No thanks. If I feel like watching it again, I will simply download it. One won't be able to say I didn't give them their due money the first time.
Very excited about Chimes and maybe the Altman (which I own on DVD, and it looks awful). The Tony Richardson pic will inevitably be available in the UK for a better price.
Certainly. Here it is: http://reflectionsonfilmandtelevision.blogspot.com.br/2012/06/cult-movie-review-prometheus-2012.html
I recommend this one, as well - http://www.chud.com/100388/stealing-fire-in-praise-of-prometheus/
Prometheus is, perhaps, the most awe-inspiring science fiction to come out of Hollywood since A.I. It's evocative and esoteric, beautiful and horrifying. Only a mind like Ridley Scott, one of the greatest world-builders to ever work in movies, could've conceived such a sophisticated space...
I'd take Alan Heim's creativity (no quotation marks necessary) in All That Jazz over some non-actor star singing and dancing as if onstage, thank you very much.
There can be more than one great movie at a time. Just because one is an old classic doesn't mean it's the only one deserving of an HD release. I, for one, would much rather have Ordinary People on Blu-ray, because its DVD edition is fairly outdated and would benefit more from a proper HD...
