I've just gotten Laura at Costco for about $9.00. I do agree that it is a bit brighter than other versions I've seen. But overall, this is the best version of this particular motion picture that I've seen. The clarity of the soundtrack is particularly good.
As most of us should know, the more popular a film, the chances are that it survives in less-than-stellar condition. I saw a 35MM print of Laura in the eighties, and there were all sorts of little problems. In a way, it is wonderful that we have become so spoiled by the high quality of Blu-ray...
I remember seeing a beautiful 70MM print run during the seventies in New York, and I distinctly remember some images from that film. The Blu-ray more than did justice to the movie, and the scenes with color filters look a lot better from the 70MM source vs. the 35MM source used for television. I...
I distinctly remember reading an article where Fosse said that he did not want the movie released in stereo due to the subject matter and the overall look and feel of the film. Of course the soundtrack album on ABC would have had to have been in stereo because there were no mono LPs at that...
I saw a gorgeous 35MM print some ten years ago of Duel in the Sun, probably struck in the fifties. Is my memory accurate, or did ABC once own the rights to this film?
I would certainly buy a Blu-ray of Duel. The photography, color and music are outstanding, and everyone plays the material with...
As someone mentioned in another message, this is a far cry from the lack of any kind of interest in film restoration forty-odd years ago, when I was going to the revival houses and seeing awful prints of some important films. Home video and cable changed everything. Even Netflix now streams very...
It was amusing to buy Brazil recently at Best Buy. The sticker was $27.99, and I was billed $34.99. I didn't notice this as I had my son with me and he was getting antsy. Luckily I saw this when I got home, and not only returned it, but asked about the web price thanks to reading the entries in...
I was stunned when I saw this new release of ALL QUIET. It has had an incredible history of being cut down and altered over the years. It was reissued in 1939 and the soundtrack had been 'modernized.' In the Blu-ray booklet, a letter from Milestone can be found commenting on a 101 minute version...
Did I read the dvdbeaver review correctly? The sound on the Criterion is 2.0 stereo, not surround? Why was this done I wonder? Wasn't this film originally released with a Dolby stereo soundtrack?
I'll still be purchasing the Criterion. I've loved this film ever since it was shown for a week in...
I remember reading the book and thinking it would be extremely difficult to adapt for movies. I think Bale's performance gave the movie the emotional core it needed. I loved it when I saw it.
I then went home and watched Siskel and Ebert, whereupon Siskel not only trashed the film horribly but...
I can only agree with all of the posters in saying that this presentation is amazing. At this point I was expecting a fantastic picture, but the sound is really blowing me away as well! My big Polks are getting a wonderful workout.
I find it the reactions to Guys and Dolls very interesting. I've conducted the show, and even directed some of the scenes for a production, and I feel that it is one of the handful of 'perfect' shows that was presented on Broadway. Even with a poor cast, the book (ghost-written by Abe Burrows...
Oh, are you in for a treat! I envy you to be able to see movie for the first time in this presentation. I hope you have a large screen.
Make sure the lights are out or low, shut off the telephone and just dig in. It's worth it.
I previously said that I am in for every Cinerama motion picture that might be issued on Blu-ray, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Thanks to my four-year-old, I've seen "This is Cinerama" about ten times by now. He loves this film.
I pre-ordered this primarily for the Friedhofer score (the main reason I also ordered The Barbarian and the Geisha), but I have a weakness for Cinemascope films with stereophonic soundtracks anyway. And Twilight Time is a great label that I want to support. I'd been wanting a really good...
Somewhere, and I can't place where now, the reason why Jarre conducted was that Boult could not conduct to picture and maintain synchronization. I think Spiegel wanted his name more for the prestige than anything else.
I can tell you as a conductor who has conducted both symphonic music in...
If any film deserved this kind of love and attention, it is Lawrence of Arabia. It's a simple as that.
I well remember sitting in one of the few seats available at the Ziegfeld Theatre three days after the film opened in 1989, which was too close to the screen. I found myself moving my head from...
Robert,
As someone who has long admired your work in saving several classic films, I truly appreciate the comments from your corner about Vertigo. I can sense that you are slightly frustrated that this release is not exactly what you might have truly wanted, but your comments are certainly...
Well, that's one of the things this forum is all about, right?
Everyone who buys this from Amazon or in a store needs to check this out. I wonder if copies were re-called. Anyway, bravo to Flicker Alley for correcting this.
A friend of mine saw this recently (I forgot where) and having seen digital presentations of many films that are already on Blu-ray and emanate from the same masters, he told me that he thought the video was poor. That was my cue that the Criterion edition was going to be less than their normal...
I can only agree with everyone who is thrilled with these two releases. i received my copies of both This is Cinerama and Windjammer on Saturday and am thrilled. True, the copies are not perfect, but given what David had to work with, and since this was a labor of love, both films stand as...
I pre-ordered them from Flicker Alley, and got a $10.00 discount on each one.
I'm in for the whole series of Cinerama films when they are released on Blu-ray. I'm thrilled that this films will be viewable again. Alex North's music for South Seas Adventure always makes me weep.
