MYRA BRECKINRIDGE with Raquel Welch and Mae West, and featuring Farrah Fawcett. A great Gore Vidal novel made into a haywire movie, in a way similar to Charles K. Feldman's 1967 version of CASINO ROYALE.
...and speaking of Gore Vidal, I'll admit to enjoying what started out as his CALIGULA...
"Something's Gotta Give" is worth the price of admission - as are the Alex North composed ballet sequences. Caron gorgeously glides with Astaire, giving the story in this version a sleazy underbelly, that's only enhanced by the sumptuous Fox look under Negulesco's direction.
Nice set. The first couple of Airport movies can compete with Valley of the Dolls as endearing Hollywood trash, but watching this set again, I found them to be comedic gems, especially Airport 1975. My favorite bits where the Sister Helen Reddy number with Linda Blair and Eric Estrada's exit...
Ideally a backyard bunker would be ideal for the theater (designed separate from the house, of course). I'm dreaming big here, so one of those home IMAX setups should complement the Dolby Atmos sound system quite nicely.
All the picture issues you describe are present on THE PONY SOLDIER blu-ray - not the least of which are color registration problems, which I don't think you mentioned. I still enjoyed seeing it get the high-definition treatment (albeit for too high a price). I didn't experience any transfer...
I remember when I saw NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA in Kansas City, the theater (Grand Opening of the Valley View Cinema) opened with a reserved seat presentation and it advertised a stereophonic auditorium also. The film was presented monophonically in spite of this. As was my habit back then, I...
I watched this blu-ray last night, and having had the dvd for years, was completely immersed once again. It's worth the upgrade for the stereo remix alone. Does anyone know if the NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA blu-ray will have stereophonic sound? I saw it in a reserved-seat engagement in Kansas City...
I'm curious about the DUNDEE double set - once disc for Caliendo and one for Amphitheatrof seems odd. What's the second disc for?
I haven't see THE FURY since the theatrical release, when I thought it was somewhat laughable - no denying how good the Williams' score is though. I hope Twilight...
I'm with you on this one. The astoundingly crass feelgood ending alone makes this one of the great misfires of the 90's. The craftsmenship is good, but the movie is a complete mess.
I don't think Disney/ABC swallowing up LucasFilm, Marvel, and whatever else they can get, will be as wonderful as many think it sounds. A lot of the Disney conglomerate's product is overrated and derivative, not to mention their board-of-directors way of handling product. This is a studio that...
I'm in the same crowd as Mr. Gallagher, having never seen the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD remake before, but the blu-ray looks to be a nice presentation and I'm glad I have one for Halloween. The only zombie movie I've ever really taken a strong liking to is Michele Soavi's DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE...
Got this one during the recent half-price Criterion sale, and it's good to hear the transfer is great. I haven't seen this one since it was first released on video, so a new high-definition Criterion transfer will probably be like watching it anew.
I got the BOND 50 set from Amazon without the limited edition book included in my pre-order. I let them know about it and they offered an extra 10% off the $149.00 current price, which I took advantage of. I already had the regular release of the poster book, so didn't really need the abridged...
I've just received a batch of European blu-rays for those interested:
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (France) Quality high-definition scan of the latest edition Paramount print with no extras and unforced subtitles. All region International release.
THE SEVEN UPS (Germany) Quality...
I saw Ann-Margret completely by accident when my dad was stationed on Okinawa back in the late sixties (I think '68 or '69). She was touring with Bob Hope during the Vietnam war and I was a freaked-out Jr. High student who stood in line for an autographed photo. I keep it in the CD box set...
I see THE SOUND AND THE FURY has a DTS-HD 2.0 soundtrack listed, so I hope that means a matrixed stereo score for the movie (along with the stereo music tracks). I'm running on the assumption that this a 4-track movie with a down conversion for pro-logic like THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN.
I can't wait for that soundtrack CD to arrive, and that German blu-ray is excellent, although I take it the film wasn't released in theaters with a stereophonic soundtrack.
That explains it, then, because some of the dialogue is right on and some of it is oddly displaced. I have noticed that some CinemaScope films are far more accurate than others when it comes to dialogue placement, so it seems some directors maybe were more cautious of what could happen in the...
I finally watched HIGH TIME last night and the Twilight Time release has very good quality. The picture probably was a good vehicle for Der Bingle at the time, but it was too cutesy-poo for me, and so I just enjoyed the music by Mancini while waiting for it to finish up. HIGH TIME was a low...
Glad to hear the Twilight Time release is a dazzler. The prelude and epilogue with Ann-Margret belting out that title tune really did it for me when I saw this in a theater as a kid, and I have no qualms about the movie being shifted as a vehicle for her. I ended up with all her 60's recording...
Got my SAE shipment notice today, too, and I can hardly wait for this order to come. I've never seen HIGH TIME, and I'm really glad to find out it's CinemaScope stereo, as Henry Mancini can make a minor movie better for me. Likewise Tuesday Weld!
I think what some listeners perceive as...
I've got the French blu-ray version, too, and the color tone has a filtered look not on the US Warner blu-ray. I believe the French disc looks more like the theatrical prints I've seen, and it's the version I prefer to project.
I projected GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES onto a 92-inch 16:9 screen and was really excited by it. I was dazzled by the color quality, perhaps to the extent that I didn't notice anything else wrong about the presentation, but I was totally enthralled throughout. Blondes was the first disc I...
The Amazon France vendor was Discountprix, and I don't see them selling anything currently. Acrodeal has a couple more VON RYAN blu-rays at 14.99 euros and will send to a US address (you'll be looking at around 30 bucks USD, including the 8.99 euro shipping fee). You might just need to search...
