I finally watched this. It seems a bit dark to me. I particularly noticed that the whites were quite murky.
Did anybody else observe the bad video glitch at 1.26.27 on their disk? The image breaks up for a second.
I watched this on my 100 inch screen and was underwhealmed by the video presentation. It put me in mind of the presentation of El Cid that got widely bashed. It is better than El Cid, but stlll lacked visual depth and vibrancy - probably on a related note I noticed a distinct lack of film...
Hoping someone can educate me on the PQ aspects of the disk...
I watched it at 100 inches and observed that the actors faces were nicely detailed (not super detailed, but quite nice), but in the same shots that the faces were nicely detailed their clothes would often look noticeably softer in...
Warner Archives - the older bland covers that sucked When I started buying Warner Archive DVD's they were just doing the really cheapo bland covers (not the beautiful ones they offer now). Is there any way to get the newer nice covers for the older titles I have?
There are no releases of these at all.
I have copies of these which are just downloaded TV rips (and are also sold on ioffer etc). It seems the only available versions of "Castaways" are missing about 20-25 minutes of footage (runtime just 70 minutes). Clearly cut in length by the TV...
It is a wonderful show - I had it on DVD-r copied from VHS. Strother Martin appears in 5 episodes (out of the total 8) and him and Jimmy Stewart make a great team.
Stewart won the Golden Globe for his performance.
Thanks for the history, I haven't seen Heaven's Gate, nearly bought the full length version (released in Aus) on DVD a few years back but put it off and decided to hold out for a HD presentation. I had no idea how far they went.. if these reports are accurate then Cimino is even crazier than I...
I hate animal cruelty. But if it happened in a film made at a time before the laws were changed, and understanding I can't go back and stop it, I will still watch the film - westerns for example.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought UA mostly set fairly small budgets, which had to be respected. So not sure why they would have been seen as restricting freedom within this already understood framework.
I think it would have been fantastic to have an entire featurette on the whole issue of the balcony scene, with RAH telling the story, and other related people included with their view points as well.
Should be mentioned that this is a significantly tampered with audio track, with different sound effects (such as engine sounds and other various changes).
I am just happy that we have the balcony scene as a deleted extra - no doubt in HD.
But I am a little confused... RAH states that he knows David Lean wanted it in the film but was not happy with the quality at the time he viewed it. He states that it was then taken off for further work with...
