Each topic in your thread can be quite complex and IMO you would be better served breaking them down into individual threads of different subjects such as individual threads on lighting, AV distribution, automation, etc. I have no doubt that if you are passionate enough you can successfully DIY...
Why not a smaller inexpensive sub and then purchase a second to match at a later date? Dual subsare an excellent option and with carefull placement can often best a single larger sub. The Velodyne VRP1200 comes to mind at -3db at 30hz-not to bad for the price. The driver used in these is pretty...
There is so much to take into account of a project like this-Congrats by the way on taking the plunge into dedicated HT/media room. Video being the primary system, what is your intended screen size? This will help to determine your throw distance for different projectors
Did you go and listen to the Martin-Logans yet? I strongly suggest you do before buying anything. I think you'll like them given your requirements. They are pretty massive and not likely to be knocked over but i don't know about kids horsing around near all this expensive gear anyway. Many...
Rocketfish makes a unit that will send stereo speaker level signal at 2.4 but the problem with that technology is low frequencies are not transmitted effectively. You could send that signal to the subs speaker level inputs and configure your receiver accordingly(no sub0. Infinity currently has a...
Very nice. Please share with everyone your thoughts on the Gotham, which i haven't heard anything that can compare. I doubt your staggered construction can hold up to that monster!
The JBL's are a decent sounding system, but the athena's would be a better choice as would infinity Kappa series towers from best price audio video. Both the stadium and kappa series are being replaced with new models soon hence the discounts and closeouts. Don't know much about the ED stuff so...
On the topic of dispersion, a close friend of mine has a Martin-Logan setup. Very airy soundstage and excellent dispersion. Individual instruments have a definate 'depth' and are perceived as either farther or nearer to the listener depending on the recording. For my personal tastes, the best...
PS-Parts express has some nice slide out rack shelves that would make life alot easier if you placed your electronics on them and left some slack in the wiring for hookups and maintanence.
Love the design-very nice work. Only one major problem though. Putting the subs inside the cavities are goin to excite some really harsh room effects that are gonna sound terrible. Get em outta there ASAP. You can use those cavities for either display boxes, bookshelves or more gear when you...
Onkyo sks-ht540 is a 7.1 speaker system only within your budget and available on amazon.com. In your price range, theres not much else. I would suggest building a speaker system in pairs as funds become available. Start with 2 fronts, a center and a sub. Even that will probobly run around $400...
thats a fairly large space so i would suggest 2 subs, experimenting with placement around the room. For $500 2 velodyne 10's or for a little more 2 velodyne DSP 12's (both on sale) would do nicely and be huge improvement over your current sub
Haven't heard the Axiom but have listened to the SVS which is one serious sub for the money. At intense levels during movies like The Curse of the Golden Flower, the drums literally popped the sheetrock screws in the room with two of these in my friends HT.
Excellent choices i must agree. If you Price shop the infinity's well, you may have some bucks left over for a bigger sub from SVS. Send a PM and i'll try and help with some retailers for you.
Most important is the size of your room and if it opens to other rooms via hallways or stairs without doors. $500.00 is a decent starting point. Are Appearance or Size limitations an issue ? You may benefit from 2 smaller subs in a large space.
Your room size definately needs 2 PBSUltras ! As for speakers as Robert mentioned earlier, You have got to out there and listen to what you like. Narrow things down to 6 or 7 choices before listening as to not overcrowd your ears and brain. Base your pre-listening tests on suggestions on forums...

Taking into account you are a musician, as i am is why i mentioned the studio monitor setup-lets say monitors from Genelec,Adam, or Dynauido. The first two have some very nice HT arrays that would outperform most commercial audio systems. I am currently doing a system for a friend using 5...
Yeah-same here-sorry to hear about the fire, obviously you're ok so thats whats important. With that kind of budget you have a lot of options. Here's something to think about. How about self powered mid field studio monitors and a AV processor that can be upgraded as technology advances-say...
The way i understand it, the optimium 5.1 or 7.1 system is all identical speakers for timbre matching is most desired. I don't think the frequency range of the speakers matters as long as it is capable of up to 20khz. As for placement, i think the reference standard is the high frequency driver...
I too have the Cerwin Vega LW-15. I'm going to replace the driver and amp, seal off the ports. A quality 15" driver with a good amp in that box will be very impresive at about half the cost.
And for about $30.00 and some sweat equity, imagine what it can do in a bigger box like Robert suggested. THis guy knows his stuff. He helped me design some custom column subs that i know are gonna sound great when i'm done- Build the box-you know you want to.
Built a mock enclosure around the dimensions of an infinity kappa12 from styrofoam and sorry to say that the overall box size is out of proportion to the column-in other word it looks terrible-i think i'll have to go with a 10" driver instead. Any recommendations on 10" drivers. Remember there...
The amp is a csi-1000 that has 6 band parametric eq and link-reilly filters at 24 db rolloff. These can be had for a steal at $500.00. They will sum the input to 2 channel output. The also feature a subsonic harmonizer that adds a new signal derived from the input that is an octave lower and...
JL Audio Fathom is a Monster of a Sub as well. Not sure of it's street price but i would take a listen before purchasing. It's big brother gotham has produced record setting spl's and extremely low Hz.
