Does anybody in the Austin area have a Sony vw60 or a JVC RS1 they'd be willing to let me see?
I'm in the market for one of the two real soon now (my theater is coming together).

Does anybody know of a good drywall supply place around Austin? Specifically I'm looking for flexible cornerbead for a non-90 degree corner (135 or so). The big box stores only carry 90. I'll be doing the yellow pages thing, but I thought somebody my have a recommendation. Paul
If that is an open invitation, I'm possible for Friday, busy Saturday. It'll be a nice break from my insulation work (framing inspection tomorrow! see pictures in my link below) I've been told that I've GOT to see your theater. How serious are you guys on the poker front? What stakes...
I stopped by the billiard store. They had two different sets of three chairs each. Pretty similar, very comfortable, very expensive. Not much selection in the store. Thanks the tip, though. I'm looking for 4 chairs that can fit in 12' if possible. I'll probably end up going with Berkline or...
Anyone have good Texas sources of home theater seating? I'm looking at two rows of 4. I like the look/size of Berkline 088's, but I'm not up for a huge investment without a tryout first. I'm willing to drive to San Antonio or even Houston (we'll combine it with another space center trip and...
I've built a model in CARA. Modelling surface treatments such as 703, carpet, etc. was straightforward: just get the absorption coefficients and play with placement and area. It was less clear to me how to model something like a deep bass trap. For now I made the wall within ~ a foot of the...
I need advice:
As you can see in this picture, I have three cabinet cavities across the screen wall and one on the front of the right wall. The right front corner (where the TV hole is now) is going to be squared off.
Options:
a) remove the cabinets completely and drywall the wall...
Very cool. Thanks for the useful information. Assuming the two woofers are matched and in phase, I assume that the center-line wouldn't have this problem. The primary listening spot (assuming it's centered on the speaker) wouldn't see any effect. Sketching it out, 5" off the center 10' away...
Jonathan, total noob question here:
My current horizontal center has a single tweeter and a matched pair of mid-range drivers, one on each side, with a crossover around 2KHz. I would estimate the two mids are about a foot apart. How do they avoid comb filtering issues? Is it more of an issue...
Actually, the one I was thinking of is called the "Home Consignment Center" in Bee Cave. (World Market is a few stores to the right). I stopped by just for the heck of it to take a pic in case anybody wants it, but they are open 10-8 on weekdays. I can stop by there tomorrow night on the way...
Weird, I live about two blocks from there. I'm tempted to run over, but I'm resisting. From what I can see of Bello racks, they are attractive furniture designed to be out in the room. I'm looking for more along the lines of bolt on rack mount equipment closet stuff that will not be visible...
So no dual speakers then. I guess my thinking is colored by my current horizontal center (woofer-tweeter-woofer). If I mounted it (or my new center) vertically, the offset wouldn't be too bad. As for the beam, my only hesitation is that I would be into structural work (structural engineer...
I've got a small foot gash from walking around barefoot in the back yard to flip off the power, and a couple of split finger tips from pulling down drywall without gloves. I am looking at SMX for a transparent screen. My only problem is that I don't really want to give up room length for a...
Darn, really! I guess I hadn't thought that far ahead. I am having a blast with this (although it's going slowly as my wife is out of town and I have the kids). I've started eyeing other parts of the house with a different eye (do we really need that wall? I wonder what is behind it... Honey...
I know this thread is sort of dead, but I'm going to post info here I think will be useful for future Austin HT'ers. Maybe we'll liven things up a bit.
I found a cotton insulation source in Austin: Ecowise (www.ecowise.com) on south Congress. They've got r11-r13-r19 (1.5", 3.5", 5.5" 1.5...
The room is already built and drywalled as a media room room-within-a-room (or two-rooms within a room). I'm just knocking out an internal partition wall. It was built into unused attic space, and where it abutted existing rooms, a new 2x4 wall was built with about a 4-6" gap to the other...
I saw the rack, mailed back and forth, and then ended up missing by a few minutes grabbing it. Oh, well. At least it got me thinking about where I'll put my equipment. It may even be a good thing that I didn't grab it, because I'm thinking I'll put my equipment into a wide/low nook I've got in...
Thanks for the pointer on the linacoustic. It also looks like SPI (Specialty Products and Insulation) carries the Owens Corning line. I may use some of that for some bass traps. I haven't checked prices yet. They are at 207-C E. St. Elmo, South of Ben White near Congress (in case somebody else...
Thanks, Chad. As the RPTV is shifting (eventually) into the family room, I'll probably focus my video calibration on the projector (once I pick one). I'll go CIY (calibrate it yourself) on the 610. I'm leaning the same way on the acoustics side right now as well. Picked up CARA and I'm going...
Anybody know of a local source of bonded acoustic cotton (BAC) or other non-fiberglass based acoustic wall panels? I'll likely go with owens corning 703 from SPI for my wall treatments and bass traps if I can't find an alternative, but I'd be willing to pay a bit more to get a non-fiberglass...
Too late, I'm good. I picked up a Radio Shack soldering station (I had two other soldering irons, but I wanted something I could control temp on better). Pulled off the back, popped off the board and went at it. I reflowed all the white connectors at top, and anything across the whole board...
Pool table is a good analogy for the reflections. But just checking: in this case non-parallel walls are an advantage, right? I've always assumed that (minimizing standing waves), but acoustics appears to be so complicated I'm checking that basic assumption. Paul
Actually, I'm hoping my room being non-square helps. The angled wall section and the stepped ceiling should help avoid big standing waves. I'm gaining confidence in the acoustic stuff I as I read more. I can build bass traps (I've got a full woodshop in the garage), and it sounds like front...
Thanks for the info. I don't see ISF calibrators closer then Dallas/Houston. When I get a projector, I may not need it, but my CRT RPTV could use some help. I'm planning on opening the front today and clean the optics. On the acoustics I've got CARA on it's way and I'm considering ETF. While...
Hey, all. I tried this in the Austin DIY thread (which appears dead but I'm hoping to revive). Leroy pointed me here. I'm looking for local Austin resources. I'm ripping apart an existing home theater put in by the previous owner, expanding it to 16x21, improving sound isolation, and adding...
Thanks, Leroy. I'll head on over... I'm subscribed here as well, however. I'm hoping we can pick this thread up again, maybe with a new batch of Austin Home Theater DIYers... Paul
Just checking, are folks still out there? Or has everybody in Austin finished their home theater (or gone to a different forum). If the latter, I would love a pointer... I'm looking for local Austin resources. I'm ripping apart an existing home theater put in by the previous owner, expanding...
