Recommend me a replacement for my Samsung 1400

I just replaced my P1400 this week with a Sony 1000ES that had an MSRP last year when it was introduced of $699 (over priced at the time IMO), but is available from at least one seller for $200 shipped (underpriced for its capability, again IMO). Sony recently discontinued this model and...

Paramount Announcement: Paramount Home Entertainment Recalling Saving Private Ryan Blu-ray Discs

BB now has the new corrected Blu-rays in stock (at least where I was an hour ago). Look for the "yellow" UPC, which is the clue that the disk is new. The packaging is identical otherwise. BB made the exchange without question; took all of 5 minutes.

HSU Sub Owners I need your Help ;)

Sorry, but when it comes to real paper, I'm useless (I won't let my wife see this response!). I have been wanting to get an AIO Printer, but not for now. Have you tried sending Hsu's Customer Support an email asking them for a copy? They were real quick with my one and only question that I...

Denon AVR 1907 DIRECT mode question

Maybe yes & no. I downloaded the manual for the 1907 and as is usual for Denon Manuals, it is a clear as mud (I remember my 3300 Manual well!). According to the manual "audio signals are transmitted directly, without passing through the tone circuits, etc." It is the "etc." that is the big...

Denon AVR 1907 DIRECT mode question

I am not familiar with the 1907, but if it is like the Denon 3300 and the Onkyo 805 both of which I have owned, then the Direct Mode will bypass the Bass Management System and all other post decoding digital processing (surround modes). Therefore, yes, direct is the same as running the speakers...

    Radio with HDTV audio band?

My guess (without any research) is no. Remember that in analog TV the audio (FM) was on a seperate carrier than the video (AM) so it was easy to build a receiver that just received the audio portion of the TV channel. Now, the video and audio are combined into one bitstream (or RF carrier) so...

Help with Onkyo 805 and PS3 settings - Voices too loud

Yep, you can turn off the center channel, however if it is going to be a period of time before replacement, I would just rerun Audyssey and let it do the dirty work. Who knows, you may not miss it depending on your sitting position(s).

Help with Onkyo 805 and PS3 settings - Voices too loud

Don't feel bad, I had a bad center channel speaker for an unknown period of time and did not know it either. Once in a great while I would hear a stange sound similar to what a piece of paper would sound like if it was flopping in the wind outside a car window. It was even difficult to tell...

Help with Onkyo 805 and PS3 settings - Voices too loud

Vince, A copy & paste from your first post: Make sure your PS3 is set to linear PCM so you can have the PS3 do all the decoding. The receiver needs to be on "Multich" multichannel. Here are the settings that you need on the PS3 also these settings will allow the PS3 to decode uncompressed...

Help with Onkyo 805 and PS3 settings - Voices too loud

Ed, You are correct, there is an "Auto" mode in the 805. Since "Auto" is default, and that would be my selection anyway, I guess I forgot all about it. This "Auto function" only automatically selects the proper decoding for the digital stream that is coming into the AVR from any of the...

Help with Onkyo 805 and PS3 settings - Voices too loud

I disagree with Ed on the issue of there being an "Auto" Mode on the 805; there is not. You must select the desired audio track on the Blu-ray player first. The "default" audio track on the Blu-ray may be one of the HD modes, or it may be standard DD or DTS (although I do not remember ever...

Help with Onkyo 805 and PS3 settings - Voices too loud

When using HDMI, and you are playing a Blu-ray that is encoded using uncompressed PCM (5 or 7.x) not DTS-HD MA or TrueHD, the display on the 805 will show "multi-channel." All standard digital processing in the 805 (bass management, Audyssey, etc.) are all still in play. Unlike "direct" or...

Why are some Blu-Ray movies quiet? Dialogue issues.

Sorry for not explaining better in the other post, but I did not have my 805 Manual handy at the time. (check page 81) If you are using multichannel then this would not apply unless your source Blu-ray player is doing the same thing. In any case, what I was talking about is what Dolby calls...

How well do self calibration features work on mid-range receivers?

Brett, I hope the OP does not mind us stealing his thread; I think we have answered his questions. I have been interested in bi-amping because; 1) like your 806 my 805 can do it, 2) the Beta 50's can be bi-amped, and 3) my speakers for channels 6 & 7 are worthless so I would not miss them...

How well do self calibration features work on mid-range receivers?

Brett, I am not sure what I would do in your situation. I think that based on most things that I have read would say set your crossovers around the 40Hz range and let the sub handle the deep end. However, maybe bi-amping can handle the load. I have read that unless you have active crossovers...

Why are some Blu-Ray movies quiet? Dialogue issues.

First, I assume that your 805 is setup properly. Using Audyssey, the 805 will automatically set all channels so the "0" on the volume control equals Reference Level (75dB SPL) (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=16308139&postcount=14102). Some will say that they will follow-up...

How well do self calibration features work on mid-range receivers?

This is not correct, although nearly everyone thinks that this statement is true. Audyssey measures the frequency response of each channel and then reports the -3dB point of each to the AVR. The AVR's firmware/software then takes that information and IT decides where to set the crossover...

Question regarding "direct" decoding mode on DVD

I assume then that you are using optical or coax to connect the audio from the DVD player to the AVR; correct? If so, Direct must be turned-off. Direct Mode will turn-off all digital processing including bass management. If you are using your AVR's 7.1 analog input becareful, because in...

Question regarding "direct" decoding mode on DVD

You did not mention which model Onkyo you have, but I can explain how the 805 works. The 805 has "Direct" and "Pure" Modes, which are nearly identical except in the Pure Mode the display, and the video processor, are turned-off (implying that these two items cause audible noise). (BTW - - The...

Need some good ideas on how i can arrange my current home theater set up

Yea I agree, that is the worst speaker mountings I have ever seen or read about. Why anyone would place L,C,R speakers several feet above the TV is beyond me. My first question is; how far back is your primary viewing spot/area? Typically, you want all the speakers at ear level (the...

    Question about Power conditioners

Yes, I have a UPS/power conditioner (APC J15) and I believe that they are useful since I have a DLP TV & a DirecTV DVR. The UPS helps protect the TV's projection bulb from unexpected quick shutdowns, and the UPS also keeps the DVR from resetting everytime there is a power surge. I live in...
