I'm a little surprised people are taking Movies Unlimited and Screen Archive listings as gospel. It's like when Amazon posts some random aspect ratio and everyone loses it until they find out the discs are fine. I'm not giving Fox any special credit, but I'd be amazed if they went back and did a...
The new "Forbidden Hollywood" sets actually have a lower price point than the old retail sets, and they're on pressed discs. Plenty of things to criticize Warners about, but I don't think those sets are one of them. I'd love to see more of that sort of thing from the WA.
There's a difference between Walmart.com "stocking" something and Wal-Mart actually stocking something in its stores. E-tailers have accounts with Warners through Allied Vaughn; you order a Warner Archive disc through Walmart.com they place the order with Allied Vaughn, you get your disc...
Two quick questions:
1) Has anyone ever bought a Warner Archive download? If so, what's your experience? It doesn't seem like the films are even available for download anymore, suggesting that it wasn't a very popular option.
2) I lost my access to TCM a few months ago. Are they promoting...
Sure, but you can't run out of space in an online store. That's the reason b&m retail stores are refusing to stock classic titles -- they weren't selling enough to justify the space they take up in the store. Selling them online is no problem...except that you lose the visibility in the...
It's true that the market for physical discs is waning, but it's hardly dead. Summit just sold 3 million copies of the latest Twilight movie in the first two days it was on sale. We must be careful not to confuse a niche market for physical discs with a niche market for classic films...
Just give them a call and they'll cancel the order. You've never been able to cancel via the DD website.
I agree that the "it's in stock! actually, no!" practice is shady and very annoying. I waited until the discs were listed as "in stock" before placing my order, only to see them...
Why assume that the Sony titles have transfers from the '80s? Sony has been systematically digitally restoring their entire back catalogue for TV and home video. The transfers of the older films that have run on TCM have been outstanding, and these new MOD discs are labeled as...
Ouch! I wish these listed at $19.99 or $14.99 instead, but I'll still try to pick up a couple to support Olive's venture.
Also, remember that Legend's Paramount films were similarly expensive upon release, but within a year or two you could get them for $5 each online. So if you can wait...
By the same token, the old strategy of restoring 5-6 films and selling them on pressed DVDs for $35 is also completely irrelevant to what's happening now. Feltenstein basically confirms that that is no longer profitable, especially for more obscure titles.
I think we need to focus on the part...
Everyone who has ever posted to this thread needs to read this interview. Feltenstein addresses every question/complaint that has ever been raised. It basically functions as the chat we're not going to get on this forum.
Jim -- I didn't get a mysterious packing slip, but I did order six Warner Archive titles, and was told via email that the discs would ship together. Later I got another email saying my order had shipped. I got one package that contained four of the six titles, and two days later received...
Before contacting customer service, I would wait a few days to make sure the missing title doesn't show up separately. I had a similar problem where two discs were missing from my shipment, and they arrived 1-2 days later. I had already requested a reshipment, so I ended up with duplicates --...
According to posts on the Classic Horror Film Board, the set has been pushed back to Nov. 15 because TCM has been unable to get Universal to fill out the appropriate paperwork. Seriously.

That's a bit strong -- do you have any evidence to support your contention that the Esther Williams sets are not big sellers, other than your own intuition? The fact that Warners would gamble on a retail release of Vol. 2 when they're hardly releasing anything else on pressed disc would...
All I know is that I signed up for the Insider's program on the first day they announced it. Then I tried signing up again last week, and they let me. Now, when I click on the details of a DVD, the price is reduced 25% (except for discs that are already discounted). I'd email or call customer...
Everyone realizes that you get an automatic 25% off every DVD if you sign up for the Warner Insiders program, right? If you already signed up and you're not getting the discount, sign up again. It's free.
It's funny that there hasn't been as much of an uproar about Sony's new releases. In the Warner Archive thread, everyone is using them as an example of what the other studios should be doing.
Columbia Film Noir: 5 movies, $59.95
Sam Fuller Collection: 7 movies, $79.95
William Castle...
Over the last couple of months, none of the emails I've gotten have contained coupons. These days they're basically just using the emails to announce new titles. Despite all of our complaining, the Archive must be doing pretty well considering they haven't really adjusted the prices and have...
I tend to agree with you, but we're only speculating, aren't we? None of us really knows how much money a film would make on pressed DVDs vs. the Archive. For all we know, the reduced production costs of the Archive discs make something like Doc Savage much more profitable than it would have...
I guess I see an alternate result to a Warner Archive boycott. Instead of Warners saying "No one is buying Warner Archive discs; I guess we should go back to retail releases", it seems more likely they'll conclude "No one is buying Warner Archive discs; I guess there isn't any market for classic...
I'm not sure people literally expect every Warner title to end up on a pressed DVD -- just all of their personal favorites. And that's the problem -- there's a lot of contention as to what warrants a retail release. It seems like for every Archive film that comes out, there's someone on this...
I sympathize with the disappointment people feel when they see that a film has been relegated to the Archive -- everyone would prefer a "real" release with extras, etc. And it's deeply disappointing that WB has given up on this kind of release.
But look at it this way: there are currently...
I would definitely not recommend ordering any of the new titles until they've been visible on the Warner Archive site for several days. WB charges your card immediately upon your order, and you will end up waiting weeks before the films are actually released.
Having said that, there are some...
Right. I think it's a bit rash to assume that the bundles are never ever coming back just because they've been removed from the website for a few hours. If you look closely, they seem to be in the middle of trying to streamline the site -- most likely in response to complaints on this board...
I'm sure the general thrust of this article is correct, but one flaw is that it's based entirely on an interview with a representative of the one studio that has almost completely stopped releasing classic films (except via the Archive). I'm sure someone from Sony, who is releasing a number of...
There was indeed artwork attached when I ordered it from the site this morning for $14.95. It had been listed as a pre-order with all the other films that were put on sale today, so I'm not sure why they would pull it at this point. But considering I've yet to place a problem-free order with...
FYI, the coupon codes don't work with discs that are already discounted, e.g. the "buy 5 for $49.95" offer. WBShop does offer free ground shipping for orders over $60, though.
