USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

That's correct -- it's much sturdier/heavier than I was expecting and looks to be closer to 4mm thick. It's essentially a sheet of acrylic moulded into a U shape (so the top has rounded edges), with two end pieces glued on either side. Be warned that Amazon UK are shipping the UK deliveries...

Blu-ray Review Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection Limited Edition Blu-ray Review - Recommended

Hi Rafael When I get time, I'll go though each disc and confirm the languages on hitchcockwiki.com but the box set packaging says this: Saboteur: Brazilian Portuguese audio and subtitles Shadow of a Doubt: Brazilian Portuguese audio and subtitles Rope: Brazilian Portuguese audio and...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Just for info, the UK set has extra audio dubs and subtitles, with the exception of "Topaz", which mirrors the US disc and contains the "director's cut" with the "airport" ending. The German box set appears to mirror the UK set, with the exception of "Topaz", which contains the so-called...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

The link with ITV could well be that ITV own the assets of Granda Television, which was founded by Sidney Bernstein, who co-founded Transatlantic Pictures with Hitchcock. In Europe, both Universal and Kinowelt have released DVDs of the film, but I don't recall either release referencing...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

From memory, the rights to the Paramount films that Hitchcock owned (Rope, Rear Window, The Trouble with Harry, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) and Vertigo) passed to Pat after her father's death and were then sold to Universal in 1983.

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Nope -- a distinct lack of extras, I'm afraid. They didn't even include Charles Barr's 3 minute introduction to the film from their previous DVD release :(

Thought some of you might be interested in the new "The Lodger" UK Blu-ray from Network. I've added some full-size screen grabs to the Hitchcock Wiki (click on the images to view full-sized). I'll update the page with the technical specs of the disc later on today. As with the previous DVD...

Apologies -- I wasn't condoning it, just noting that once titles slip into the supply and distribution chains, sadly it's not long before they're pirated :(

I wouldn't expect it to stay too long at that price -- Zavvi/The Hut regularly do really good offers for short periods that undercut their rivals, mostly to draw customers onto the site. I think if Universal's distributors were already shipping the set in the UK, the titles would have started...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

It looks like this article isn't available online anymore, so I've put a copy on the Hitchcock Wiki: http://www.hitchcockwiki.com/p/70764 The article relates to the "restoration" work done for the 2005 "Masterpiece" DVD set, although I suspect the HD masters subsequently used for the HDnet...

    Aspect Ratio Documentation

A truly fascinating thread :) Just chipping in with a comment (and apologies if someone has already said this) -- the US Warner DVD of "Dial M" is 1.33:1 and says "presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition" on the DVD case. From this, I'd assumed...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

I think Deepak meant that "The Birds" wasn't released as part of the "Legacy" Hitchcock DVDs (which were individual releases of the transfers used in the 2005 "Masterpiece" velvet box set). Universal were planning to release it in 2008, but ended up shelving it (for reasons unknown).

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Everything I've seen so far points to the 2007 HDnet and 2005 "Masterpiece" box set video transfers and audio as having the same origin -- HD scans prepared by Lowry Digital in 2004/5 and basic restoration work carried out at Universal's BluWave Audio facility in 2005 (the May 2005 issue of...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Wow -- Nick's got an eye for detail! The ghosting effect in "The Trouble with Harry", which I've certainly never noticed before, is present on all the DVD releases of the film (both PAL and NTSC), and the 2007 HDnet 1080i broadcast. Here's an enlarged crop of the white roofs, a full 1080i grab...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Not sure how quickly my UK set will ship from Tesco Entertainment, but I'll report back and add screengrabs to http://www.hitchcockwiki.com/p/69926 as soon as it arrives. I wish Universal were more forthcoming with information, but I've tried maybe a dozen times over the last decade to get a...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Or, to look at it the other way, it seems increasingly likely that all of the HD scans (perhaps with the exception of The Birds, as that has apparently undergone a more recent restoration) were done by Lowry Digital in 2004/5 and then Universal's own BluWave facility did the transfer clean up &...

Just for completeness, I've added grabs from the December 2007 HDnet 1080i broadcast of Vertigo (which had the full restoration credits) to this page: http://www.hitchcockwiki.com/wiki/Vertigo_colours The grabs are taken from the raw .TS broadcast stream and (like the other images) have had no...

Just throwing this into the Vertigo colour mix: http://www.hitchcockwiki.com/wiki/Vertigo_colours I've gone back and made lossless PNG frame grabs directly from the DVD VOB files, so there's no processing of the image at all (i.e. no ratio correction, no tweaks to colour made by DVD playback...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

By the sounds of it, the new version of "Frenzy" with the altered credits has replaced the version that was previously used for HD broadcasts, so I wonder if "Marnie" has too? Here's a crop from the 2007 HDnet HD broadcast of "Marnie" -- I had a quick look at my copy of it last night and the...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Anyone any idea of what the history of these HD transfers are? Lowry Digital and Universal's BluWave Audio were involved in the restoraton work for the 2005 US "Masterpiece" DVD box set (see http://bit.ly/RLua21), so I'm wondering if Lowry did the HD transfers way back then? HD transfers of the...

    Under Capricorn

I'm curious as to why the Laserlight's are illegal? I'm sure that I've read several times that the early Hitchcock's are now essentially public domain, plus many of the major e-vendors are happy to sell them. The comparison at DVD Beaver doesn't seem to indicate that the Laserlight release is...
