Bob, My guess is that the Multi-channel inputs are for DVD players that are also SACD or DVD-A players. These formats can only be wired through multi-channel connections (something to do with copy protection). In your case if you do not have SACD of DVD-A capability with your DVD player...
"The Phillips 963A is supposed to be a good player. It's a univeral player. $499" I got mine from J&R Electronics for $350. I have been real happy with it. It does SACD as well, but not DVD-Audio.

I don't know anything about their newer stuff, but I can say that I have a JVC Pro-Logic reciever that I bought about 10 years ago when I was in college, and it still works like brand new. Never had any problems with it. Dave
