Sound and Vision should be plenty. All the basics are there for him to use and the cost is a lot less.

That is another thing I have noticed with my new set. Variation in picture quality from channel to channel is much wider than it used to be. Some channels look absolutely great while others just don't look nearly as good.

At least from my experience the new breed of HD sets are not as forgiving as the old analog sets. My old Mitsubishi I just replaced a few months ago was much easier to basically plug the cable tv into, hook up the dvd player and watch. I did calibrate the set once and the picture looked better...
