They didn't want anyone to miss the quite lengthy and drawn-out droning of the Universal logo (and, how clever to desaturate it to b&w!?)-- when you start the disc, start a show, end a show, change viewing selections and so on. Then, there's that MacroVision™ logo that we just couldn't do...
Here's that mini-review that no one asked for.
The discs are here and I've been going between the Tubi downloads and the dvd versions and, well, they're close but the downloads have more color and sharpness. Why? I'd guess it's an encoding issue.
There are 6 discs in the usual wallet holders...
"Well, don't just stand there!"
The folks at VEI certainly aren't just standing there: I've already got this thing on the way from Niagra Falls.
Niagra Falls!
Ah, no. Not gonna go into that.
I hope to be checking this out this weekend!
Guilty pleasure for me. Corny as anything but pure, silly escapism and nostalgia, taking me back to simpler times.
Snagged this and right on the heels of downloading every episode from Tubi, too. Excessive? Yep. But that's me!
"Can you give me Geritol?!!"
Abso-toot-ly awesome! I'm keeping my old dvd set for the doofy, extra laugh track added on to the episodes. Bit of nostalgia in those now-severely-inferior transfers!
Plus, I want to track down that one extended, repeated laugh that sounds like The Joker's laugh box: "HA-hahaha-ha-ha-ha-ha...
I have a copy of the dvd titled The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy Vol 4 that has a crack from the center all the way out to the edge on the label side. It plays beautifully, mostly, with a hiccup here and there depending upon the player (I do have a fully intact replacement copy).
I have...
That is certainly the optimal way to store video cassettes as, not only is the tension optimal, but the winding should be even, as well, to prevent damage to the edges of the tape and shifting of the tape on the reel which can cause bunching, dropouts and other playback problems. One caveat is...
Nothing you can do about it. Once the data layers become unreadable due to oxidation, dried out binding or otherwise, it's over. Sometimes people have moderate success pulling files off some discs, but once the media is gone it is gone. For what it is worth, I'm still checking my WB discs to...
Nah, I didn't use that as a swipe at you, only I was explaining my use of "impossibility" in context.
Below are my titles I have laboriously inventoried, photographed, documented and checked so far (the most frustrating ones?) and, did you know?: Amazon selectively removes old invoices? I've got...
Nevah mind. We're on it. Got in contact with Customer Service and they're going to see which titles (the ones I have a receipt/invoice for) can be replaced.
Pretty fast service with a near-immediate response. I don't expect the constellations to shift or anything, but at least they're willing...
Snarky is the term, I think but, yeah. I've read a few unverifiable reports of folks who have had great success getting discs replaced-- pretty common titles, a few single discs from previously box-only sets and some titles now available only on dvdr from The Archive.
I've attempted to contact...
Maybe I've asked before but what is a reliable email address to inquire about the impossibility of replacement discs? I've just scooped up a handful that no longer work as I check thru the WB titles in my collection. Surprisingly, my only emotion is being a bit miffed-- not thoroughly enraged...
Before WinDvd went to adware junk (right about version 8) it had the PAL conversion built-in and played with no distortion. It also had the wonderful capability of restoring a smooth video look to native, flickering PAL, giving extra options for optimizing film playback (Larurel & Hardy...
Except that in the early episodes, everyone stayed in one big hut, until they had squabbles that led to separate living quarters. Only the first few episodes had any semblance of continuity.
Oh, and the Japanese soldier episodes needed to be seen in order for reasonable context-- when The...
Well, it got tooken down before for no reason (or, I mighta del-teted it by mishtake?!!), but here's the whole Ralph's Rival episode re-created with the tag subtitled in English utilizing the first-generation, Anchor Bay copy of the main episode and a closest-to-the-original satellite rip of the...
There's local opt-out programming that can take precedence, as well. I recall an incident around 1998 where an East Coast CBS exec was refused VIP tickets for The Letterman Show. As a result, we got treated to Howie Mandel instead of Letterman for a full week as retaliation.
Though I made my...
Colorization of black and white photography just never works right, even going back to the olden days of hand-tinting b&w stills. Short clips of films can get dern close to being passable if done with care, as in the case of some Doctor Who episodes that had small sections from recovered from...
Youngsters! Lulz!! I never saw any show consistently in color until 1980. Our folks kept the only color tv in their bedroom and we had the Zenith b&w console in the main sitting room.
For Gilligan, I had the whole colorized 1st series on archive dot org, alongside the unedited vhs releases...
Just a bit of musing where old meets new in the "mastering" department because, well, valium and Delta-8 and not ready to sleep yet..
Might be the memory playing tricks, but I think any original broadcast masters for WKRP (and other period shows) had the sound compressed and mixed to play, at...
"Sweetening", they call it! Lulz!! At least these aren't as bad as, say, Sanford & Son, where the end laughter and applause is often so heavy-handed, artificial and muddy it sounds like an explosion of running water.
Pal o' mine used to do audio mixing for BET in Atlanta and had access to hours...
Having a real go at this set while on "house arrest" by the doctor due to a surprise bout with Covid. I'm finding that I quite enjoyed Three's A Crowd as I binge-watched that series in one afternoon (THC gummies might have something to do with that, as well). I started with The Ropers but, for...
I for one appreciate the time you took to compile that long list of trims. Are you planning on re-editing the episodes to make them complete-er, where there's material missing from the dvd? I could do it easily, but I don't have access to the syndie versions.
Yep, a lil' tape damage. At least we weren't "protected" from seeing imperfections like a certain American comedy show about roommates or a British series that features different actors playing the title role. Sometimes, shows like that and others have damage that is just sooo damage-y that we...
Losing any material in a favorite show or film for licensing reasons is bad, but when whole chunks get removed and not replaced due to careless syndication tape procurement or otherwise is just criminal.
Many times we get maybe only one shot at getting a "complete" show released on any format...
