There is a button on the remote labelled V-Output that switches between HDMI and the analog video outputs. HDMI does show up on the LED panel of the player when selected by the V-Out button.
My vague recollection of prices at the stores on Queen West were that the basic solder-type bananas were under $2 each, decent set-screw plugs were between $2 and $3, and the best plugs with set screw and a slug (so the screw presses a floating slug of metal into the wire) were $3-$4 each...
The best value in good banana plugs I've seen in Toronto were at Supremetronics and Active Surplus on Queen St. W. I don't remember the price I paid for the banana plugs I bought at Supremetronics, but they were about half the price of comparable plugs I've seen at Futureshop and Radio Shack...
Furniture can help deaden the acoustics, especially sofas, loveseats, and armchairs. Rugs used as wall hangings and bookshelves filled with books can help too.
Sure, let them know you're going to take your time price shopping and you'd be happy to spend your money elsewhere if the price doesn't meet your satisfaction and walk away. Most of the time, if you've made it clear you have money to spend immediately, they won't let you walk out without a last...
I've ordered the Peppino D'Agostino and Laurence Juber discs. I'm dying to hear how guitar music sounds on DVD-A, especially on highly regarded AIX recordings. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait til the end of February for Amazon to get it up here (Canada) and then over to me.
DTS-ES and Dolby-EX encoded DVDs would best take advantage of a 7.1 system, and my favourite demos are LOTR:Fellowship of the Rings Extended Edition (the opening battle scene, mines of Moria) and Star Wars episodes I (pod race) & II (opening scene and dogfight in the asteroid field). For music...
One time I experimented with my CR3s as bookshelves in a stereo set-up. They sounded OK, but their performance was that of a smaller bookshelf, i.e. not a lot of guts. When the bi or di-pole settings were on, their imaging wasn't precise (no surprise there) so I didn't feel they projected a...
You can negotiate price at Bay Bloor, but also try the other dealers in the Toronto area: American Sound up in Richmond Hill and the Sound Room in the east end near the Beaches.
For receivers, I think a really good value would be a Kenwood 6070, if you can find one (they're discontinued). Last time I saw one at a Best Buy in TO (about a month ago, so you may not find any around), it was $450. I will also recommend Canadian speaker brands for the best value. What...
Probably, though you can also mail order it. Two companies I use are Golfsmith and Golfworks. Some retailers may carry it but you'd be more likely to find it at a component supply store (they'll sell clubheads, shafts, grips, etc). If there's a "non-golf" equivalent of this solvent, I don't...
Just a tip if anyone uses two sided tape and wants to remove it: you'll want to use a solvent used in installing grips on golf clubs. One particular brand, made by Brampton, is non-toxic, has little smell and would be safest to use. In the case of a speaker held down by double sided tape, I'd...
You might want to read up on some of the posts over at Home Theater Spot, as there seems to be more messages about the JVC there. I remember reading something about some problems with the JVC set, though I can't remember or gauge how big they were.
I have to agree that the FS prices are reasonable considering our (Canadian) prices on most consumer products are higher than in the US, even after working out the exchange. You may be able to bargain a better price at a local B&M. Where in Canada are you?
Energy speakers are good but you should take a listen to any of the Canadian brands (Axiom, Dahlquist, Energy, Paradigm, PSB) for good sounding speakers at good prices. Ordering from Marc's store is an option you should consider. I haven't done so, but those that have speak positively of the...
I've used both coax and optical and get the whine; no line conditioner. A few things to be aware of: - a listening room at the store may be noisy enough to mask the whine - it's dependent of the volume, so you can still hear it when no source is hooked up (thus, interconnect quality is not the...
This noise problem is absolutely not a case of making a mountain out of a molehill. It is the same ringing tone that a high pitched tuning fork produces. White noise you can shut out (like the noise of the fan on a PS2 or a video projector), but this tone just can't be ignored. It's literally...
Beware of the high frequency noise problem many of us 7300 owners have found on this receiver. Some have listened to the OSE found it also exhibits this problem. Check the following links for all the info. Marantz 7300 hiss Marantz 7300 review (read the posts towards the end of the thread...
Apparently there is a fix that will reduce the noise, though I haven't had the repair done to my receiver yet. I did send it back for service (Marantz is distributed by a company called Lenbrook up here in Canada) and they sent it back saying they couldn't find anything wrong. I now have to...
The prices for Axioms I got a local dealer here in Toronto were pretty much the same as the US prices on the Axiom website. The quote I was given for M3, VP100, QS4, and EP125 was $1100 Canadian.
I'll second the recommendation to look at Canadian speaker brands. You should be able to find a decent system with $1500 or so left to spend on speakers. So go out and audition Paradigm, PSB, Energy, Athena, Dahlquist, and Axiom and see what you like. They'll all have a system in your price...
Maybe these threads on a problem with the Marantz 7300 will sway you towards the HK: Thread 1 Thread 2 (this is a long one and make sure to read the posts towards the end)
Here are my observations on the 7300's extraneous tone: - It is a high pitched tone that is similar to the sound of your ears ringing - It does not increase or decrease with volume changes; the tone remains constant - The tone is rather low in volume and seems that most people only hear it...
