Hello Ron,
thanx for the comments re: restoration. Just one quick note: Criterion had nothing to do with either restoration or the info plates you referred to, these came from here.
my best as usual & stay healthy :))

You did not hear me. The globe WAS CHANGED due to an exchange way AFTER the initial release. What was seen then and up to very recently was the change made post the RE-RELEASE under a different distributor. As a result, the Universal Globe was cut on both features. They now have been restored...
And, now, also for the first time, the respective CORRECT GLOBES. Before, one was practically the duplicate taken off the other feature due to damage; and dupes and prints caried over the "effect". This is now corrected (globe starts originally from a different position and has different...
I’m generally constrained by both time and budgets.
Not to misunderstand - so am I. And the workflow is tight-fit accordingly. But it fits the needs in a very different way, allowing things that are impossible or extremely hard to achieve otherwise / "other ways"...
... presuming all units of...
I’ve always selected elements via benching, a flat bed, or sample scans of a dozen shots or thereabouts. Never had a problem.
Why would one need to color two million frames, when a raw file, and a test will give the same results.
A raw file, especially a logarithmic one, certainly does NOT. But...
Hey Bob,
Thanx for the comments.
Re: your Q: This was due to a (very conscious and) clear - and in retrospect, correct choice re: workflow. Several key factors played into this:
- the actual mechanical status (how damaged are the various materials - what is, really, the BEST SURVIVING SHOT)...
Hello Robert,
hope this finds you well and in good spirits.
Two things:
1) the so-called "above the title" credit is NOT unusual or IN ANY WAY problematic at ALL. It has been and is traditionally used in Europe this way by archives as well as rightsholders such as the Murnau Foundation for...
Robert,
to err is human. It IS a NEW, all encompassing (all still existing pre-print materials were involved/scanned/used) - true to the word and meaning - restoration, completed after almost 2 and a half years total in 2018. It simply took a while 'til everything was finished up and delivered...
This I do not know. But this would merely be a question of budget - and a very good idea to do.
Oh, no ... This is not good news at all. Any chance the estate may change its mind (assuming this is the problem) ?
7S was originally released mono in Japan, the stereo tracks contained on the...
The article is now more than a year old - and it has not gotten any better with age. It is literally littered with errors and, worse, nonsense. 7S is being restored from second generation fine grain positive and third generation duplicate negative elements, not prints. As for the sound: that...
David,
with regard to the stock(s) used - I have (and worked with these, and, of course, others, quite a bit in the last decades).
But there is (a lot) more to this as there are a number of ways the materials could be affected both during production (use of lenses and filters) and post, in...
The ABOUT THE TRANSFER details of Criterion's BLOW-UP may hold the most likely answer.
It lists the following:
"This new digital transfer was created in 4K resolution on a Director film scanner from the 35mm original camera negative and a 35mm interpositive."
The sequences in question could...
With regard to the comments made claiming "DNR" was used, that there is "LOTS of teal" and "what you get out the other end is a wan ghost flower of what these movies looked like in their original general release. 'Ugly' doesn't begin to describe them" I can only say this:
Absolute Nonsense.
Bob,
the English language - usually providing an apparently endless sea possibilities with which one can define even the most outlandish subjects - is - ironically in this case - coming well short to the German "Wortschatz" otherwise not exactly known for its flexibility in this area. The...
Reading the posts in this thread that followed the initial starter from Bob Harris I increasingly got the impression that his initial message got lost in the thick of opinions and interpretations and perhaps it is best to pause for a moment here.
To be absolutely fair, I believe that the...
I hope you don't mind me correcting a couple of things on the restoration of these two films, which have been with us for the preservation for now more than a year.
The restoration and preservation of both features - CANADIAN PACIFIC and THE CARIBOO TRAIL - is being done by us on behalf of...
Some FX shots are even problematic at 1.85. But it is ironic - if you look very closely you can see how much effort went into the work to protect the film at 1.37, 1.85 and even 2.00 in most cases.
By the way, I have taken a look at THIS ISLAND EARTH again, and while in most shots 2.00 is...
Taken a look again, this time with a bit more time at hand (recommendation: one should always do that ). I stand corrected. Thanx for your input and my apologies.
The scan and the master is, indeed, a different one. However - and this was that initially (mis)lead me to my in this...
ToE on (the U.S.) Blu-ray is certainly not of that "endevour", if it is already finished. The US version is merely different to the MoC or the other international Universal releases (such as France) in color [gradation] timing - and, of course, encode.
4K restoration ? Did I miss anything ? I don't think so.... As far as I know all masters date back to 2008 and 2010...and none of which is 4K, not even close; in fact all final masters of that title are in HD.
As far as I know, the 1.66 framing was made first with the latter part of the demo being prepped 1.75 - and then RL approached, Apparently with surprising if not undesired effect.
Partly, but it should not be anymore. HDMI or DVI direct connections (AV etc) on monitors can be displayed by most...
Thanks Bob,
I check the film tonight again. I recall it being awkward screened at 2:1, and it always stuck in my mind. One of the captures also seems very tight. But I have not seen it in some time; so if this should turn out to be erroneous for some reason I gladly stand corrected. In any...
Bob,
updating on AHDN briefly - I was first under the impression (by what I was able to gather from the initial coverade on the CC Blu-ray) that Richard Lester was preferring 1.66 over the distributors' "general policy" of 1.75, but evidently it was exactly the other way around with CC first...
I believe there is a misconception here. The Laserdisc John Sparks is referring to is most likely EPISODE 1, which, indeed, only exists in its best form of the original theatrical cut on Laserdisc as a Japanese Edition. It cost something like $90+ when it came out and was one of the hottest...
I still to this day get a lot of openly admiring comments with regard to Laserdisc as a format and its properties (and sometime advantages exteding even to today) when people "study" my collection. It is ironic: Some years ago, most believed these to be (vinyl) records. Now, when the eye falls...
