Do you leave your speaker grills on?

I keep them off all the time. They look better, and for some reason sound alot less localized (to me anyways) with them off. No kids, animals or other factors to concider for the saftey of the drivers. Dust shoulden't be a problem, just go at them with a duster every few days. I actually...

Athena Audition as first HT setup

You must have gotten them while they were on sale already. The AS-C1 is $229, same as the B1's, and the F1's are $499 regularly.

    Athena Owners Unite!!!!

Currently have the AS-B2's as fronts, B1's for surrounds, C1 centre, and the AS-P400 sub. It's in a bedroom, so the Panny SA-HE100 is powering them. I'm itching for a new reciever, but until I move, anything above this would be overkill. I love the system though. Coulden't ask for more.

    $500 CAD ($340 USD) for a 25" Television?

If you want a flat screen, any of the Toshiba models are great. I have the 24AF42 and it was about $550 CAD (if your friend doesn't mind going a bit over). I chose the Tosh over the Sony because i've heard numerous reports that their gemoetry is worse than the other brands.

Panasonic SA-HE200 Dolby Digital EX not working

Check the DVD case. Does it say DD EX 5.1 or 6.1? I've only seen EX material in 5.1, never 6.1.

    Bass shakers

A question, click the "related items" tab in the Parts Express link above, the third item is a 120W Subwoofer Amplifier. Would this be ok to power the shakers? I know nothing about external amps so any info would help :P

Best bass CD's/ songs for the ultimate test of any speaker system?

If you want some heavier stuff, check out the CD "Domination" by Morbid Angel, specifically "Ceaser's Palace". Regular bass dips during the intro (which lasts about 2 minutes). My whole house shakes when I play this CD.

    A Question About Sub Cable

Ok, set everything up. Direct in with speakers set to small (xover at 100hz) is optimal for movies, while the Sub In with the mains set to large and the xover at 55hz is optimal for music. Switch them around and they don't have the same impact.

    A Question About Sub Cable

Ok, thanks alot for clearing that up for me. I'm out to get the sub right now, it would have been a pain not knowing this stuff. So direct in it is. The high xover on the reciever shoulden't affect it too much, it's an extremely small room (about 9 x 12 if I remember correctly with 8 foot...

Friggin dyslexia, I always read it as Mantraz.

    A Question About Sub Cable

Hmm, are you sure? The lowest the reciever xovers at is 100 hz. After that, it's 150, then 200 hz. As from my last post, "The crossover frequency is variable from 40Hz to 120Hz. A convenient feature of the crossover control is that it is marked to indicate the position that matches each...

    A Question About Sub Cable

It's the Athena AS-P400, you can check out the back of it here : http://www.audioadvisor.com/store/im...?sku=ATHASP400 Just switch to back and zoom in. [edit] Darrin, you actually nailed it on the head. From a review: "There is also a single RCA line-level Sub Input as well as a Direct...

    A Question About Sub Cable

Alright cool, I'll probably end up just using one sub cable without the Y adapter if it doesn't make a diffrence. Where would you connect it though, the Sub In or the Direct In (on the subwoofer)?
  15. Rex Quinn

    A Question About Sub Cable

Alright, I'm going to need a Y cable to connect my sub properly. The sub had two female connects and the reciever has one female connect. I wanted to get an adapter with one male and two female and put it at the reciever end and send two cables to the sub, but that would require me to buy a pair...

    Pro Logic II for music?

Yeah, I forgot to mention, it's pretty subjective. I actually prefer regular stereo mode, but I'm using stereo surround just to break in the speakers. Rick, you're right though, to each their own. I can't make any sense of trying to create real "surround sound" with music. I listen to really...

    Speakers...

Well in this case then, with the "accidental" Bose owners, I guess the best thing to do is shake your fist at the "speakers" whenever you walk by them :P

    Pro Logic II for music?

I despise using the pro logic 2 decoder for music, it sounds terrible. My reciever (Panasonic SA-HE100) has a "simulated surround" mode though where it just sends the same signal to all speakers. Can't go wrong with that, or just plain stereo mode.

    Speakers...

Man, way to trash his purchase. You're just as bad as the Bose enthusiests when it comes to preaching your opinion. Well, in this case, opinion is fact, but still, it's not really your place to tell him what speakers to buy in a thread inquiering about speaker grilles :P

    Help--Have Bose but want more?

The whole Audition line by Athena is great. If more people have actually heard the speakers, I think they'd get a lot more praise then they currently do. But the Audition line is relitivley new, so not many people know about the speakers. Either way, Athena speakers are a damn good purchase.

    Athena AS-B1... Wow!

The whole Athena line was on sale at Future Shop until the 31st. I bought a pair of AS-B2's a week earlier at $284, brought the recipt in and they gave me the diffrence (they were on sale for $199), which I put towards the B1's. So I really only paid about $74 dollars for the B1's :P If you...

    WANTED: Break-in Opinions

Breaking speakers in is definatly worth it. I just got the Athena Audition setup (AS-B2's for fronts, AS-C1 as centre, and B-1's for surround. I started out with just the B2's and the centre, and played about 6 CD's in their entirity and normal listening levels. I just added the surrounds today...

    Question about binding posts

Ok cool, thanks for the info. I have a kind of entertainment center (it's a bedroom setup) but i've cut a tiny hole in the back on the bottom (where the reciever is) to feed the speaker cable out seperate from the other wires. One more question though, most binding posts have two holes to insert...

    Question about binding posts

I'm just wondering how tight you're supposed to screw these things down using bare speaker wire. If i screw it as far down as I can, the wire flattens insteat of being round and twisted. Am I supposed to tighten it so the wire is secure but just enough so that the wire stays cylinder like and...

Pioneer vs Panasonic DTS-ES Discrete a big deal?

Hey guys, check out the Canadian Panasonic website ( www.panasonic.ca ), and search out the SA-HE100. It is clearley stated that it has a Dolby Digital EX decoder, and has the logo as well. They only recently changed the Canadian site to have the EX info though, 2 months ago it didn't have it. I...

    JBL PB10/12 or Athena AS-P400?

Thanks for the input everyone. Its either going to be the PB10 or the Athena for me, I'll see if i can audition them side by side in the near future. The PB12 would definatly be overkill, this is a bedroom HT setup :) So far though, I'm leaning towards the Athena, it just seams easier as it's...

So what is missing from the HTF FAQ and PRIMER??

One thing that would have been helpful for me is a post on the diffrent type of speaker wire connections (i.e. Banana plugs, spade clips, pin-type and so forth) maybe with pictures on what they all look like, as well as the advantages/disadvantages (or lack thereof) of using those type of...
