Since the Criterions are basically ports of the French MK2 disks, why not pick up The 400 Blows from Amazon France (for example) here (assuming your system can play PAL R2)? The first batch of Truffaut DVDs released by MK2 included English subs (and menus) on all the supplements... something...

It's worth keeping an eye on the Korean releases of Western stuff as they are often amazing - like the Dances With Wolves 4 disk leather case edition (superior to the similar Japanese one and a lot cheaper!) and The Two Towers film tin; I believe there is a very smart Dogville edition just out.

There's always the breathtaking Korean Limited Edition Military package, readily available from Yes Asia, which has the DVDs in a canvas case along with notebooks, maps, dog tags and the like. 1.6 kg!

What I wanted most on the existing L&S disk is the commentary that the filmmakers recorded... if that is on the 2 disk then I might be tempted to upgrade.

I heard a rumour that there would be R2 releases (in the UK and France), but that was a while ago. One thing you can be certain of: the UK issue will be in a boring amaray, whilst the French one will be packaged like the metal tin ones but better! BTW - you're aware of the next wave being up...

Nice review - I had filed this one under "Cheap Saturday Morning Style Sequel - Ignore" but having read this review will have to reconsider. L&S is one of the best Disney movies from the last twenty years!

www.play.com are an excellent seller and very reliable - they're also pretty much the cheapest. They even sell R1 :D

The other thing is price - I got the BTTF trilogy from CD-Wow for GB £17.99; individual disks would probably cost only a little less than that. Same thing with the Three Colours trilogy which I picked up from Amazon.ca for about £18 shipped to the UK.

I believe the European theatrical release (which was before the US release) was a different cut - could that be the source of the different running time? Anyone know how long the original European release was?

Here's a link from IGN which apparently shows the menu for the forthcoming R1 release which unfortunately suggests the red tint is present on this disk :frowning:

Fair enough - to me it was no distraction. Just out of curiousity: What will you (as in all the peeps who refuse to buy the R2) do if the R1 turns out to have the red tint? Will you hold out, possibly forever?

It's true that the screen shots going around make the red tint look bleedin' obvious (sorry), but I can assure you that on a CRT television at least it is barely noticable... (I can appreciate why it would bother some folk though - I might've cancelled the R2 myself if it hadn't been posted...

I have the Japanese R2 and have to say that the red tint is a non-issue for me; if you're even aware of it after the first five minutes you're not watching the film. Having said that, I'd consider the R1 if it truly doesn't have the red tint *, just to see the difference - and an English dub...

Another vote for Come and See though I don't agree that it's a bad DVD (assuming the poster referred to the Kino issue) - it may seem rough and ready but I recall that is how it looked in the cinema. Similarly the 4:3 aspect ratio which some take exception to. It has to be one of the very best...
