At last a serious edition of Philadelphia is coming our way: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...hreadid=209169
The deleted scenes should be very interesting, also Jonathan Demme's commentary.

Just to fill in a detail here, our viewing on the BenQ/110" diagonal Silverstar was about 14 1/2 feet, about a 1.8 distance over screen width ratio. Looking a bit more at the DVD of Master and Commander, and also a lot of Matrix Revolutions (DVD), rainbows were quite apparent on this...
Colton - Dave: The DVHS version of Alien is considered a reference quality hidef transfer at this point. Maybe, Dave, we could take a comparative look at that some time. Blacks were wonderful on the BenQ, compared with my 10HT. This was to be expected, but was really fabulous nonetheless...
Todd: Screen door was a lot less than my 10HT, but very occasionally visible at our seating distance of about 17 - 18 feet. (I can check this with the tape tonight and be more precise). With the DVHS source, rainbows were noticeable on the BenQ - at least for me. M&C has some really...
Todd: Screen door on the 10HT is really noticeable, it is an older LCD. The current LCDs are much better, and the DLPs and DILAs are better than that. But the 'ultimate' screen door cure is DILA/SXRD at 1080x1920 as in the Sony Qualia 04 or JCV HD2K. Ah, the joy of dreaming.... Matt

Cees, I quite believe you, but am still really looking forward to this screening! I have the feeling we'll just kick back and enjoy the movie once it starts... Matt

You can see some sheen on the Silverstar, yes. But it has seriously improved the image from my 10HT. (Albeit at the cost of revealing the pj's screen door rather clearly and thus making me hanker for a new pj!). Watched the dvhs Moulin Rouge the other evening with friends who have been...

Dave: I was just about to post or pm you to bring the M&C DVD over for our screening on Sunday to A/B compare it with the DVHS version. You beat me to it! Folks: We'll be using the BENQ 8700+ with a 96" x 54" (110" diag) Silverstar (Gain 6 version). We could also try both the Panasonic RP91...

First, everyone, thanks for all the tips on Opera disks, I'll be picking up some of these! I concur on the Forbidden City Turandot, by the way, very nice. Watched a good bit of Dialogues des Carmelites last evening. Picture: Good to very good - no edge enhancement (bravo!), but somewhat...
A moving performance on DVD is the Poulenc Dialogues des Carmelites, Opéra national du Rhin, Marthe Keller director (1999). Really stunning staging, very spare, with some wrenchingly emotional moments, especially when the nuns mark themselves as martyrs-to-be, and of course, the final...
Adam: Any chance you might review the DTheater version as well? As more day and date DTheater titles emerge, it would be good to have them treated in close proximity to the DVD versions. Also, if previous titles are an indication (Moulin Rouge especially), the sound on the DTheater version...
Rich: Exactly - as though you were watching a Nan Goldin photograph turned into film. When I first saw the film I thought Ms Coppola was explicitly quoting Goldin. I wonder if she has ever mentioned it. Matt
I agree with David L. that the first Cocoon picture is a great film. And I'd love to see the second released as well. Um, Fox, could you give us another two superb DVHS releases to go with the DVDs of the Cocoon pictures?? (I am so spoiled at the moment with X2 and Moulin, and just want more...
Hi all: EE on this disk is pretty severe in some places, I am not sure I would have given it as high a rating as Dave did (and I was sitting beside him for the projector viewing since it was at my house). But, to be fair, I really only noticed it on those bright, sky-backlit shots. On those...
Got my X2 and Moulin Rouge tapes yesterday, and watched Moulin last night. It is wonderful! Colors, detail and sound far beyond the dvd. The sense of 3 dimensionality is fabulous - there is actually a city beyond those rooftops... (also, there was not a single glitch on my so far not updated...
Dave: Chiming in on the Catalog Review issue (in a public post no less!): Catalog Reviews would be really welcome, since sometimes worthy films get lost in the glare of so many blockbusters. You mentioned the Cocteau "Beauty and the Beast". A review of that in tandem with Wim Wenders "Wings...
Dave: Thanks for the excellent review! Having been present at the screening Dave based his review on, I can amplify his impression that this is a very fine DVD transfer. The minimal edge enhancement is truly minimal: a slight brightening of the transition line between high-contrast...
Does anyone know if Leonard Bernstein's Mass is available (in any video format?) I know it has been televised (on PBS, years ago). There was also a much publicized production at the Vatican a couple of years ago. Don't know if that one got filmed or otherwise recorded. A quick search on...
DVDFile has details today on Sordid Lives, to be released by Fox:

"Arriving a week later on February 18th is Sordid Lives, a dark comedy which played to strong notices and good box office in limited release this past spring. Featuring a...
Sordid Lives Update:
This is from the "Southern Baptist Sissies" newsletter, 11/16/2002:
"Palms Springs SORDID LIVES one year anniversary was an amazing experience for all of us. Thanks Palm Springs! At the end of this email is a list of the theatre where Sordid is playing. DVD...

A Sordid Lives DVD is on its way! :D
My friend from Palm Springs attended the one year anniversary party for the film's screening there on Saturday night. Del Shores and members of the cast were there, and Mr Shores said the DVD should release on Feb 18...
Ahh. A digital hd production day and date release on D-VHS! I'm quivering with anticipation. Having just gotten my player, each new title is a kind of revelation and learning experience, be it a recognizable Francis Bacon painting in long shot in Entrapment, or the gorgeous fabric textures...
