    Sealed Tempest opinions...

Hmm...Maelstrom seems to have the same issue. Okay, how would a 1503 respond to 250 watts with EQ to try to flatten it? I don't have anything to simulate it with(only LspCAD). -dave

    Sealed Tempest opinions...

I'm(still) trying to decide which direction I want to go with the DIY sub I'm planning to build. Today, I started looking at a 170 litre sealed enclosure with a Tempest and a 250W(into 4 ohm) plate amp. LspCAD seems to say that setup with equalization will net 106dB anechoic flat to 20Hz. Is...

    Bosch 1613AEVSK vs. Dewalt DW621

I thought long and hard about getting the DeWalt. It was my first choice. However, I decided that for what I plan to do I just couldn't justify it. Harbor Freight has refurbished Skil 1645 routers(2hp, variable speed, soft start) on sale for just $59. If I decided to really get into...

HTF REVIEW: "The Fast and the Furious" (next reference disc) *REPOST*

The story line wasn't bad, but as a former import street racer and now kart racer/autocrosser, I was thoroughly turned off by the technical inaccuracies. Maybe I'm being too picky here, but it would not have taken anything from the movie to be technically correct, and it would have won the...

What does the Yammaha amp put out into 4 ohms? Would it be well suited to powering a sub? -dave

Need help making decisions on DIY subalignment...

Okay, my wife and I went looking at some furniture today, right? Well, I compromise and let her get the 3-piece cherry entertainment center she likes, and in return I get to fill a corner with thunder. I have a 43"x23"x21" volume in which to place the sub...in the corner between 2 couches and...

Ideas on improving my mains...need input.

NOTE: I just realized I have the position of the capacitor and inductor switched in the illustrationj above. -dave

Ideas on improving my mains...need input.

I've decided that I just want to do whatever I can cheaply to these, i.e. no new drivers. It's just not worth buying new drivers to settle with for the compromises of this cabinet. I would be willing to build or (preferably)buy new crossovers(no soldering skills) and do the other cheap tweaks...

Ideas on improving my mains...need input.

The porting is done via 4 5" long 2" diameter ports. Closing off a port or three would lower the tuned frequency. Running the numbers on LSPcad, closing one port drops the tuning frequency from ~43Hz to ~38Hz, closing two drops it to ~31Hz, and closing 3 out of 4 gives ~25Hz. Even with three...

Ideas on improving my mains...need input.

Okay, I started taking things apart and poking around a bit. First, the speakers are Blues BCS-882 with 2 8" drivers and a 1" fabric dome tweeter. 8 ohm impedance and 200W RMS powerhandling according to the placard on the back of the cabinet. There is no internal bracing, but the cabinets are...

Ideas on improving my mains...need input.

Actually, no, I haven't done anything to them. I thought about upgrading the crossovers, but I don't really know a whole lot about crossovers(yet). Maybe I'll open them up tonight and look at the cross-overs to see if I can diagram the circuit--or describe it and let you all help me interpret...

    DIY sub crossover questions...

'Try this - play a CD or something in Prologic mode. Then switch in the tape monitor loop (with nothing attached to the tape monitor inputs/outputs).' That's a fine idea there. I guess I should have thought of that myself. 'Now the question is - Does the subwoofer output get a copy of the...

Sander of choice for $50 or less

I've got a Porter Cable 1/4-sheet sander, model 340, that I am really happy with. It comes with a case and a dust collection setup. Lowe's and Home Depot both stock them for ~$40. -dave

Ideas on improving my mains...need input.

I want to improve my mains and build a center channel to match them later this year. I guess I could just buy new speakers, but what fun would that be? My speakers are kinda old, mid-90's vintage, and were made by the now defunct Blues speaker company. They also made car audio. Anyone...

    DIY sub crossover questions...

It is really important to me that my sub(which I am currently designing/planning/acquiring tools) blend in well with my mains for music and movies. I have a Yamaha RX-V592 DPL receiver without digital surround. It DOES, however, have a sub out because it is a 5.1-ready receiver. Whenever not...

    Building a DIY sub...many questions...

On amp mounting: Those side-mounts look nice. How hard was it to get the geometry right for the mount? I'm more worried about actually cutting the right shape than designing it(I'm an engineer..) Did you do anything to ensure no leaks around the screws mounting it to the tube? What about...

    Building a DIY sub...many questions...

I'm starting to plan the construction of a sub for a 70/30 movies/music mix. I've got lots of questions, and feel free to comment on anything else as you see appropriate. Here's where I am so far: 85L net enclosure volume from 18" sonotube, ported and tuned to 20Hz with 50% stuff for 23 Hz...
