Toll Free Numbers getting through my "Anonymous Block"

About 2 months ago I got one from one a group claiming to raise funds for a police benevolent organization; to help send the kids of fallen police to college, or camp, something like that. I first asked how much of each dollar they collect goes to the charity, and they said about $.08...

    soymilk vs coffee

Lewis Black said it best... Basically there is no such thing as soy milk because there is no such thing as a soy breast. There is soy juice, but if they called it that, no one would drink it.

    Lousy radios on space shuttle?

I wondered the same thing, as I watched one interview on the last mission. Somehow they can get full motion color video, which requires about 6 mHz bandwidth, but the audio is only 3 kHz telco quality.

It's been a while. Who now has VoIP?

I've had Vonage as a secondary service for about 1 1/2 years. As I gained confidence I cancelled my Verizon Fax line, and now use the Vonage fax line. As of today, my main number is ported to Vonage and I'm 100% VoIP. I was paying Verizon over $90 per month for 2 lines, PLUS another...

You can stop the speculation. The images were doctored, and are thus unreliable. I see clear evidence of Edge Enhancement.;)

Help! No electricity in one room only.

I had the exact problem shortly after moving in to my house. It was built in 1961, but the kitchen was completely renovated two years before we bought it. Turns out they put in a new outlet, a GFI, about 3 feet off the floor BEHIND the gas stove. The stove's clock plugs into it. It had tripped...

    Encroaching Neighbor

An interesting article, ironic in its timing here: "Split Fence" In case it's not available, A resident of a wealthy area in Richmond, VA, didn't like the fact someone was building next door to him so he and his wife put up a 249 foot long, 6 foot high chain link fence on their property...

    Encroaching Neighbor

Another reason to document your situation, and your objection to it, is the potential for her to gain title to it via adverse posession. Adverse posession is when one person openly occupies another's property for an extended period and the owner does nothing about it. After a sufficiently...

It needs to be playing something. There will be no voltage, except when audio is present.

    multi-meter question

Sure. Put it on AC volts, on a low scale, say 1 or 2 volts. Be sure the probes are plugged into the proper jacks on the meter. Put the black wire on the outer conducter, the red on the inner and he should see the meter move like a VU meter. Compare the two channels for about the same...

I read locked threads. Does that make me a bad person?

I do the same thing. Many years ago someone, I think it was Steve Goodman, wrote the "Perfect Country and Western Song," that contained every C&W cliche. This thread makes me think of what would be the "Perfect HTF Locked Thread." I think it would be about a political, chauvanistic...

    cell phone tower lease

It all depends on the area, but that sounds low to me. How many antennas, and at what height? How many transmission lines? Who will be responsible for tower marking and maintenance, if required? If it's a monopole, that shouldn't be an issue. Spell out clearly who has the right to lease...

A few things that bother me...before I forget

The explanation I was given a long time ago is back in the day, gas stations were "service stations." They had a mechanic on duty or available, at least one service bay, AND pneumatic tools. Those tools required pressurized air, and it was no big deal to run a hose to the lot for tires. Now...

Question for people with cable modem

It sounds like they have a security shield over the connector. Go here for more info. BTW, basic cable, that uses your TV tuner instead of an external box is usually less than $15.00. I have a cable modem from Cox, and the discount I get by subscribing to basic cable offsets the cost of...

What do you think of Lending Tree.com

I did my original mortgage through mortgageselect.com. They sold it to a bank. When I refinanced, I went to lendingtree.com but decided to get it through the bank servicing my original. They made it easy, and I had a trust relationship with them already.

Need help with family vacation to Las Vegas in May.

I highly recommend the MGM Grand. When you tire of the Casinos and glitz, load up the kids and take a day trip to Valley of Fire State Park. It's awesome. Then spend some time at Lake Mead. There's a lot more to Vegas than Vegas, and it is all worth the trip.

    A Holiday Message

Well, I got it off a Radio-Tech mailing list. After similar questions, the poster said they got it from Bob Stevens at Scott Studios. Another follow up from a contributor going by "Cowboy" said, "I was gonna ask if he got it from me, a decade or so ago. I was gonna post it here today." So...

So how many celebrities live near YOU?

Depends on what you consider a celebrity, I guess. Not many Hollywood types here, thank God, but there are a few "personalities" nearby. Tony Snow lives down the street from me. Sonny Jurgensen just sold his house, but it was in my parents neighborhood, about 3 miles from here. George Allen...
