It also occurred to me that (coincidence or not?) 540p is 1080 divided by 2! Probably is a sales gimmick, Hitachi can claim HDTV is twice the resolution, making it much easier for the unsuspecting consumer to understand.

Nothing will take advantage of 540p. It is really just a sales gimmick, IMO.
525p which you see in the specs on other new equipment is actually the standard resolution BUT only 485 lines are active (in the viewing area), hence 480p. The 1080i standard for HDTV actually produces around 1120...
Satellite is the only way to go if you want HDTV in Canada.
I also tested Shaw's digital cable and was not impressed. I have had the expressvu HD 6000 receiver for a couple of months now. It was worth it just to see NYPD Blue in HD and DD 5.1, something you will never get anytime soon with...
