Welcome to the HTF, Veronica.
Your DVD player may very well be region-free, depending on where you bought it and how much you paid. Some retailers sell modified Pioneer dv344 players. These are identified by a 'green dot' sticker on the box. If it had this sticker, you'll be able to play R1...
Most receivers have separate controls for sub, LFE, and DTS LFE (if applicable). The sub is an overall control for bass management ie redirecting low frequencies to the subwoofer, whereas the LFE control only affects the LFE channel. (Note that +10 dB DTS LFE is the same level as 0 dB LFE...
Just got done watching the R4 release and even after reading all the early reviews I was still stunned by how incredible the transfer looked and sounded :emoji_thumbsup:
Two comments regarding the R4 and R1 releases:
-The player generated subtitles on the R4 are a shame.
-The layer change...
Great review, Dan. I stayed up past my bedtime waiting for you to post ;) And thanks to the others who have posted their thoughts.
I can't take this waiting. Arggggghhh!!!
The 218:44 runtime sounds like the total length including the extended credits. The original version was ~178 mins including ~8 mins of credits, leaving ~30 mins of extra scenes and ~11 mins of fan credits. The PAL runtime should then be 209:59.
Lewis, That review is for the Australian model, which is not progressive scan for PAL or NTSC. If there will be a similar replacement in the US, it will most likely be progressive scan for NTSC.
I'm sure I'm in the vast minority, but I couldn't sit through the original SW trilogy. I tried when I was about 6-8 years old, and had no interest. Then they screened on FTA a couple of months ago and I really tried to watch to see if I'd been missing something, but switched off 15 mins into...
Am I missing something, or does the R1 release have the same specs as other regions apart from the cover art/amaray vs slipcase? All indications I've seen only confirm the commentary on the 1st movie, not all 3. Oh well, R4 for me regardless.
With redbook CD's, the continuous analogue sound waves are divided into discrete samples. A sampling rate of 44.1 kHz means that 44,100 samples are taken every second. The 'resolution' of the sampling is 16 bit, which means that every discrete sample is represented by a 16 bit binary number. The...
1) FotR: 2 and 5 disk sets (6th August, 12th November)
2) Karate Kid Ultimate Collector's Pack (3rd July - R4 only???)
3) BttF Trilogy (21st August)
4) Simpsons Season 2 (24th July)
5) Toss up between Buffy Season 4 (5th June) or Mulholland Drive (10th July - R4)
I saw MD in the theater last night (1st viewing), and as it was presented I didn't notice anything that would require the scene to be altered. The only thing visible to me was shadow, any detail would have been my imagination.
The DVD isn't out in R4 yet so I can't comment on the change, but I...
My first teen (12 or 13) celeb crush was Danica McKellar (Winnie Cooper on the Wonder Years). Later followed by Jennifer Love Hewitt in Birds of Paradise, Cassidy Rae in Models Inc (whoah, that's embarrassing...did I really type that?), and Keri Russell in Malibu Shores :b Oh well, at least my...
Matrix - Good movie presented on a great DVD, even by today's standards.
Se7en - Great movie and extensive, worthwhile extras. Especially those that deal with the DVD authoring itself.
Your Favourite Movie - Mine was Shawshank Redemption. There's nothing better than watching a quality...
Donovan,
The 4% speed-up DOES occur on PAL machines playing PAL film-based (ie 24 fps) sources. It is the nature of the format, regardless if it is played back on a PAL system or a PAL compatible NTSC system.
Jason, you have good taste but I had heard Keira was only 16. Apparently the DOB in her bio is wrong (should be '85, not '83). Of course, I could also be mistaken
This is probably a stupid question, but how does bi-wiring work as far as the amp goes? Do you need an amp that is capable of bi-wiring?
I understand bi-amping - using seperate amps to power the low and high frequency drivers, but with bi-wiring where does the second set of wires connect to the...
I can hear the difference, but for movies it doesn't bother me. I'm more bothered by the NTSC artefacts than the PAL speedup. However, for music/concert DVD's they MUST be at the right pitch and tempo (I'm also a musician). Luckily, most of them are shot on video anyway so it's not an issue.
Kevin,
While I'm not familiar with the Outlaw, for multi-channel SACD or DVD-A you will be using the 5.1 (or 6.1, 7.1) input on the pre-pro. This input is inherently 'analog direct' since it bypasses all digital processing circuitry.
Generally, the 'analog direct' feature refers to the ability...
Hi Michael.
The EZ board site is Link Removed
AFAIK the firmware upgrade is supposed to eliminate hiss in rear and centre channels when in stereo mode. If your receiver doesn't have this problem (mine isn't noticeable) it probably isn't worth the hassle.

I just picked up the R4 today, will watch it tonite.
I believe (and I hope) that the only additional extra the R1 will get is the inclusion of the original mono soundtrack. If that's the case I won't be bothered, but if R1 gets a commentary...
